My daughter was 15 years old when she began stealing, lying, running away from home, drinking, and ditching school. In order to make herself look like the victim when she was caught, she began telling stories of mental and physical abuse, all lies. "Thelma" was the first CPS person who told me to work with my daughter more positively. No mention to my daughter about her behaviors, no proof of abuse.

Over the next few months, my daughter knew all she had to do was call Thelma and her behavior was blamed on me. After being threatened with a "report of abuse in my file", I took my daughter to mental health as suggested by Thelma. Instead of treating her defiant behaviors or even addressing them, they blamed me!!! She had some great stories to make her look like the poor little abused girl. They put her on "meds" which I did not want and said they would make sure I gave them to her. Funny they never checked up on her stories.

After putting up with threats and accusations - none of which were substantiated, I was threatened that "it wouldnt look good for me" if I didn't allow my daughters boyfriends family to keep her, I said go ahead. That was by a worker named D.J..

The only abuse my daughter experienced in my home was being adopted at age 4, participating in cheerleading, ballet, private school, soccer and little league. I can accept that maybe I was overly concerned about her weight - she would eat everything - and tried to make restrictions and I pushed her to go to school.

Well now she is over 250 pounds, no job skills, and has only completed her freshman year of high school. She lives with her boyfriend and his grandparents - and works full time at a fast food place. Thank you CPS for your great help. Maybe if they had spent more effort helping her with her behavior instead of focusing on what they could get me for - my daughter may have turned out differently. If I had the resources, I would go after them for what they did to me and my family.

Jean, You're a GREAT mom!

AUTHOR: L. - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, September 28, 2004

Your adopted daughter may one day wake to learn just how much you really care for her welfare!

If it had been me, I would have looked immediately for a LOCAL/COMMMUNITY family counseling/guidance center. The counseling sessions cost according to your ability to pay and usually totals no more than $5.00 per person per one hour session. Group (Mother/Daughter) or individual counseling should help your situation. Don't be afraid to look for better help. Your daughter's school counselor should have several phone numbers for you to call and set up an appointment with the one you feel would be most beneficial. I really don't think it's too late for you to do that even now.

The caseworker that she called should have recommended local community family counseling as a recourse to help you and your daughter. I do NOT understand why they will NOT recommend local services.

I hope, as your daughter matures, she'll realize how her call to the caseworker has or could damaged your relationship with her. I hope that the relationship can be repaired very soon ... whether she continues to live away from your home or not for the time being. She needs you and you need her!

Be patient as you set up an appointment with a local counseling service. If she will not attend the sessions with you, go ahead and share your concerns with a counselor so they can give you recommendations or at least relieve your frustrations. You won't be sorry that you took that direction!

Jean, keep the Department of Human Services OUT of the situation as long as you can. They are seldom as much help as the local family counseling center. (Experience speaking.)

When my son called the local DHS organization asking for parental classes, he was told to move out of the house, take the children and get a divorce. Now, nearly four years later, the children have been taken into custody. Their Adoption was Finalized in March 2004. I've begged for the children to be returned to my home but their ears will not listen. I've completed the foster care and adoptions training but the answer is still NO!

Jean, I'm very concerned that your daughter will be taken into DHS custody and your parental rights removed so she can be Adopted to someone of THEIR choice. The Adoptions and Safe Families Act of 1997 (ASFA) and subsequent legal documents provides unlimited monetary awards and bonuses for them to Adopt children. They'll be rewarded + or - $100,000 just for taking your daughter into custody and adopting her. Their current push is to Finalize an Adoption within six months! It's called Swift Adoptions!

When you have time, Jean, read my rip-off report. There's a lot of things going on in DHS NOW! Their emphasis in Oklahoma is to medicate them on mind-altering drugs. I don't feel that mind-altering and experimental drugs are the answer! Parenting classes, where the parent feels free to ask questions and share concerns, would be a much better means to resolve problems.

I hope your daughter's job will help her realize that she NEEDS to complete her education. She needs to accept her responsibilities for her own education and career. I hope she'll set obtainable goals for her life, including setting weight loss goals. (I believe you mentioned that was a concern.) Once she can get her own life in order, she'll be able to compete with her fellow students and return to graduate and set goals for her own career.

Best wishes to you as you endeavor to help your daughter adapt to youth and to the challenging responsibilities of young adult life. Hang in there! It's tough! Call your nearest family guidance center. Go for to tops!
