I had recently met with a so-called career counselor at R.L. Stevens and Associates. The meeting turned sour early when the counselor started using hard-core sales tactics to lure me in.
I had been job hunting for a few months prior to this meeting. As part of my job market research, I bought Richard Bolle's book What Color Is Your Parachute?
Bolle has criteria in the book to grade professional career counselors on. Well, R.L. Stevens and Associates failed miserably on eight of the ten criteria listed.
They tried their best to make me, a college graduate and veteran, feel as inadequate and incompetent at job hunting as humanly possible.
They told me they would have an expert resume writer rewrite my resume. I asked what was wrong with my current one, and they proceeded to insult my writing abilities. Not a very brilliant idea when:
A) You are addressing an English major looking for a technical writing position
B) You are addressing someone you are trying to gouge for thousands of dollars ($2500-$3500 to be exact)
C) You are addressing a well-educated person who will black ball your company's name in order to save other job hunters from the inconvenience
R.L. Stevens and Associates is also a member of the Better Business Bureau (BBB). What a joke.
If you do not believe me, check out What Color Is Your Parachute, schedule a meeting, and judge for yourself. Do not be fooled by their advertised successful placement rate either.
