In May 2010, I went to Rose City Motors in Jackson, MI to purchase a car. I test drove several, picked one out and decided to buy it. I had cash as a down payment and a van as a trade in that had around $300 left to pay on.
We went to Rose City because my husband is the one who works but has no credit. I had the credit but am a house wife. So we needed a dealership that would be able to finance us.
I believe the sales person we worked with was Amber. She told us that we would have high a interest rate because of my husbands lack of credit score. She said that if we made the payments on time for a year, come back to Rose City. They would either refinance the car for free or we could trade it in on another car.
I signed the title over on the van I was trading in. I told Amber that the payment was due in a few days. She assured me that the van would be paid off before the payment date. Amber said she would mail all the paperwork to us in a few days and we were on our way.
Less than a month later, I received a late notice to the finance company for my van. The payment wasn't paid and there was now a late charge. I called Rose City Motors and was told that days before was when the final payment was mailed. They did pay the late fee but it went on my credit report as a late payment and is now held against me.
It also took several months for Amber to mail us all our paperwork. I ended up having to call her and request it.
Then in May 2011, I called Rose City about refinancing or trading the car in as I was told to do. I was passed around to several people, gave our information and was told that they would call us back in a few hours. A week later, I called back and went through the whole process again. Never received a call back so I called back a third time.
I was told they had good and bad news. My husband now had a good credit score but we owed more on the car than it was worth so finding a bank to refiance would be hard. I asked about trading the car in. I was told that they would run the numbers through a few banks and call us back. 3 months later, I am still waiting for that phone call.

Get your credit reports from the three major bureaus and follow the process they proscribe where you can add explanatory notes or rebuttles to entries found in those reports.  Write your report using ONE PAGE and make it fact based...names, dates etc.  Although the payments are STILL your responsibility, a report written by you may take the "sting" out of that late entry which was caused by this dealer.

As for trading in the car, do you realize what will happen?  You still owe on that car.  If you trade it in, the amount you owe doesn't disappear.  It is rolled into the new loan and you will be paying for two cars but driving just one.
