The check engine light recently came on in my Toyota van so I took it to Auto Zone where they will hook-up a OBD II diagnostic reader to it for free.

They told me the code P1155 came up which is Air fuel sensor heater circuit(bank #2 sensor # 1).

So I called Russ Darrow Toyota in West Bend, WI and spoke to service manager John Lausten.

I told him that I took my van to a auto parts store that hooked a reader up to it and code P1155 came up, he said there is no such code and I should probably bring the van in and have them do a diagnostics test on it.

I then made a appointment with him to have the test done.

When I dropped the van off I told him to call me when he knew what was wrong and not do any repairs till he gave me a price and I o.k'd it.

He called me after several hours and told me my van needed a air fuel sensor and the cost would be $ 411.09 ( this sensor is right under the hood in front and easy to access, just un-plug 1 electrical connector and unscrew the sensor then screw the new sensor in and re-connect the electrical connector)

WHAT A RIP-OFF

He then proceeded to tell me I should have my timing belt replaced because they wear out after 100,000 miles. This he said would cost $ 349.95.

I said to forget the repairs and I would be back for the van.

When I picked up the van I said since I paid for the diagnostics test I would like him to write down the code that came up when they did their test, he did and to my surprise he wrote down P1155 which is the same code Auto Zone told me for FREE.

I told him he had lied to me on the phone when he told me there was no such code and that he ripped me off $ 94.99 for a test that gave the same code result as I got for free from Auto Zone.

He told me I gave him a different code over the phone, to which I replied no way I read it off the paper I got from Auto Zone.

I told him I was not happy and this would not be the last he heard from me.

I would not recommend that anybody take their vehicle there for repairs because they employ dishonest people and are ripoffs.

You are better informed than most customers

Both of you (Karl excluded) are right. As a tech, I have seen non-factory scan tools read codes incorrectly. So if you want a shop or dealer to know what is wrong with you car for sure the diagnosis it. Now with Toyota 95-99% of the time it is a bad O2 sensor. So how would they Diagnosis it?? First they would ohm it if that was good they would then check the fuse then check for voltage at the connector then they check for voltage leaving the ECM then all grounds for the ECM and then it would be an ECM. I have seen Rats chew the wires for the o2 sensor. This is why you pay an hour for diagnosis some times it is an hour some times it is 5 minutes some times it is 2 hours.

The sensor is about 200 dollars' and before you say it is all dealer mark up the dealer gets the sensors for about 120-150 you can go to auto zone and get one for 20 dollars' but I would not trust it. I do not believe in after market unless you are altering the car. You probably paid about 1.0-1.5hr labor+ diag and you get your total.

YOU WERE NOT RIPPED OFF just about normal price for a dealer. If you did not want them to diagnose you could have gone to Joe's shop down the road and told them what to do. Yes, timing belts do wear out. You should get them replaced baste on Mileage and TIME (It is rubber and is affected by old age)

Karl you are still are not helping you are just being a wind bag

Mr. Lausten

As I stated before,"They told me the code P1155 came up which is Air fuel sensor heater circuit(bank #2 sensor # 1)." I believe this states a specific sensor.

Also I did take my van to another service place that ran a test for free that came up with the same code P1155 and charged me $ 239.94 for the repair not $ 411.09.

All said and done I think most people would feel ripped off.

wrong...here is the real story that is an actual document

"frank" brought the vehicle in because he took the vehicle to auto zone. They gave him a generic code for an oxygen sensor. There are several oxygen sensors on that vehicle hence why "frank" did not perform the "easy" repair himself that he described in his original posting. "Frank" nor Auto Zone knew which oxygen sensor failed or if it was a convertor that had failed. In order to figure that out you have to have a bit more advanced diagnostic equipment than what was provided at auto zone. The technician also has to perform manual electrical (volts, olms, etc) diagnosis with a fluke meter to determine exactly which sensor has failed and why. Having explained this all to "Frank" (I can publish his real name as he did ours if you would like) prior to us looking at the vehicle and also having him sign for the dollar amount it would cost to determine the exact problem (I have the legal document which he signed prior to the repair), I do not really understand how this was a "ripoff". He came in for a service, we performed the request service he verbally requested and signed off on for his written approval, in turn we, as a business, collected for the service rendered. In the United States, people and places of business do charge for repairs and/or time spent remedying a consumer problem on a product. I know it is a very strange concept but I am certain that "Frank" goes to his place of employment and gets compensated for a work he does in a given day. Why should any other business or person be any different.
