I helped a client who was planning a move from Palo Alto to Dallas talk to different moving companies. Because they seemed friendly and competent, she chose Safari Moving and Storage. They were not the cheapest, but they were less expensive than the big boys Here's the email I just got from my client about the move (mind you, this is one of the nicest people I have ever dealt with, so it wasn't just her:

"The movers were terrible - by far, the worst I've ever used. They gouged my walls and new hardwood floors, broke, chipped or scratched more items than they didn't, and overall had a terrible attitude. The driver showed up at 6:15 at night with two contractors (probably those guys who wait out on the corner looking for work), which was far too few to get my stuff moved in efficiently. One of the contractors was mentally "challenged," shall we say, and after about an hour of casually pushing furniture around, decided to stop working, grunting that "it was too hard." I got the driver to help, but by 10:00, both of the contractors had left, leaving me alone with the driver, who finally left at 1:15 in the morning. I filled out the little report form notifying the company of the damage, but the driver wouldn't leave me a copy ("that's not how this works"), and I was so angry by the end, I just wanted him to leave.

I'm still in the process of fixing the things that were not irreparably broken, and I haven't heard a word from Safari about the damages. Of course, they didn't provide insurance, so it's probably a waste of effort anyway. I'm trying to simply ignore it, since if I had to deal with those guys again, I'd probably have an aneurysm."
