Last year while while working for and co-owning a company (an LLC) I set up an account with Sales Genie to try and get new leads for sales. The account was set up in my company name, using our company address and company credit card, and I was the contact. In December my business partners and I decided to separate and they took over all assets and debts of the company. I contacted Sales Genie and told them I was no longer associated with the company and gave them the name and number of the person for them to contact to change things such as the company contact and to get new payment details. I was told this would happen.

In January I took a few calls from Sales Genie asking me to make payment and again I gave them the new contact at my old company. At this time I was told there was a 12 month contact which needed to be fulfilled and once again I asked them to contact my old company.

In April I started to get calls from a debt recovery service, NCO Financial Systems, who had been contracted by Sales Genie, to try and get the money from me. I explained the situation to NCO Financial and told them I was disputing the debt. In fact a few of the representatives of NCO were sympathetic and couldn't understand why I was being personally chased for the debt. Others weren't so sympathetic and tried to lie to me saying Sales Genie had my social security number and this is why I am liable for the debt. Since the account was opened in my old company name there was no need to give them my social security number and I never did. I have now instructed my attorney to contact NCO Financial Systems to stop the harrassing phone calls. I did call Sales Genie one last time to try and resolve this and to get them to contact my old company (I did speak to the owner of the company a couple of days ago and he said no one from Sales Genie or NCO Financial Systems had contacted him even though I have given them his name and number on numerous occasions), but their line is since my name was on the account as the contact when it was opened then I am the one who is liable. They also said since the debt has been passed over to NCO that they were no longer able to discuss this. I am happy for my attorney to deal with NCO, but the moral behind this is NEVER EVER open an account with Sales Genie without knowing that if you leave the company that you were with when you opened up the account that they will hound you forever and a day trying to frighten you into paying them. It is so not worth the hassle.
