San Antonio Great Dane Rescue, Homeward Bound Dog Rescue Lay person claims to be able to prescribe medications for dogs without a vet consultation and then dispense these medications PIPE CREEK TX Texas

I adopted a 18 month old 6 lb. terrier mix from Jo Ellen Cockroft of San Antonio Great Dane Rescue on Saturday, July 14 th. She was suppose to be healthy and ready for adoption. We went to a thrift shop there in the same town of Pipe Creek and took the dog inside. The ladies working there all cooed and gushed over her because she is very cute but also noticed some yellowish pus in one eye. I cleaned the eye out with some saline when I got home and continued to watch and clean the eye for the next day and a half. I emailed the rescue to let them know I had a problem and was contacting them in the prrescribed 7 day 'temporary adoption' period so that we could get her back to the vet. Jo Ellen had told me that she had been sick in March and meds had taken care of the problem. Jo Ellen said she hadn't known of the eye issue before she brought her to me and that she had an eye infection in March when she was sick but that it had clearned up. She said she would get drops for her and we should meet so that she could give them to me. I told her that was fine but that she would need to have a vet give her authorization to treat before I could receive any meds. It is illegal in Texas for a non-vet to give out medications. I told her I would rather take her to a vet to find out if there were any underlying issues. She refused and told me to bring the dog back. I could not in good conscious take her back a dog that was ill with her attitude I was afraid for the dog. 

I asked her to tell me her vets name that treated her before and I would take her in. She told me that their vet had retired and did not see clients and only treated their animals as a courtesy to them. This just range so un-true to me, that I just cut her off and told her I was reporting her to the proper authorities and hoped she lost her rescue privileges. 

FYI, when I took her to the vet, they said she was 8.8 lbs and they thought she was older because she had too much tarter on her teeth to be only 18 months old. It's going to cost me another $300 to have her teeth cleaned and serviced. Most rescues take very good care to make the dog as healthy as possible.
