Over the past 3-4 months my Scana Energy bills have been astronomically high. Despite the fact that I have paid 2 separate plumbers to check for gas leaks in addition to Atlanta Gas also checking for leaks, my bills continue to be several hundred dollars per month. I have never had bills this high in the 10 years I've lived in my house, even in the coldest winter months.

I have made 6 calls to Scana over the past 6 weeks regarding this. I've asked for the meter to be examined for malfunction several times but have been told that they will only come out to read the meter again. All manner of excuses are offered to explain why the bills have been so ridiculously high. None make any sense and the bills just keep rolling in.

Even though I've made several payments over the past 3 months (none less than $100) my bill remains nealry $600 as of today and my latest bill includes a notice informing me that my gas will be turned off in 3 days! I was told today that I could have a few more days to come up with a payment of almost $300 but that nothing more could be done for me beyond that.

The "Customer Service" rep I spoke to today, if you can call it that, merely reiterated the same scripted responses I've received each time I've called about this issue. I am contacting several other consumer agencies in addition to the Better Business Bureau. There is no point in continuing to "work" with Scana. It's like talking to a wall.

Deregulation benefited Georgia Natural Gas Company

AUTHOR: OHara - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, October 21, 2010

Public utilities are what are called "beneficial Monopolies."  I believe that is a contradiction of terms.

Once they gain monopoly status, they think they are entitled.  I've never dealt with a single one that the employees are not brusk and abusive with the customers.  The attitude among employees is "You can't get it anywhere else so you'll just have to put up with me abusing you."  Obviously, this attitude comes from the executive suite down.

Back in the 1990's, the Georgia Legislature tried to right this situation by introducing competition.  They deregulated natural gas so that other marketers such as Scana could come in.  But, there was one big problem.  Since Georgia Natural Gas (Atlanta Gas Light Company/Southern Company) had been the monopoly for many decades, they owned all the distribution lines.  They simply became the monopoly distribution company and they took advantage of that by charging other marketers exhorbitant rates to distribute their gas.  This insured that Atlanta Gas Light/Georgia Natural Gas had a distinct price advantage and would remain the predominant natural gas supplier and distributor.

Again, the Public Service Commission or legislature tried to right this situation and I believe set the distribution prices to a reasonable level.  In the meantime, natural gas bills soared.  For some customers, their monthly bills doubled or trippled and it does not seem that they have come down at all.  I had one monthly bill that was $693.00!  That was far above any bill I had had before in the 30 years I've been in this house and I have friends who tell me their bills have doubled or trippled from the previous years.  Deregulation simply allowed Georgia Natural Gas to rip the customers off while they are abusing them.

Deregulation comes up occasionally in the legislature but nothing happens.  I don't see any resolution to this problem any time in the near future.  Georgia Natural Gas has deep pockets and it appears they have the legislators in their pockets along with our money.
