We just received a phony invoice from Scholastic School Supply for $647.50 for educational material that we did not order. Their address is in New Jersey and we are in Florida. We do not use out of state vendors just for this reason.
According to online reports from schools, they have been doing this since 2005 and usually charge the same amount on the invoice, $647.50, no matter what they claim was ordered. You must send them a letter disputing the debt or they will most likely turn it over to a collection company, keeping themselves at arms length for the collection for the phony debt.
After you send them a letter disputing the debt, file an online complaint with the New Jersey Attorney General's Office for the inconvenience.

Our school district received at least 5 fake invoices in the last few days from Scholastic School Supply as well. All for the amount of $647.50. However, the remittance address on my invoices is in Las Vegas, NV. The phone number is the same. All claim to be for educational materials; in this case, workbooks. However, they are not on our vendor list, we did not order anything from them, and we received nothing from them.
I have reported them to the BBB as well as the Attorney General's Office in NV and MN. Fraud is, of course, illegal. But it is a larger crime to use the US Postal Service in your attempt to defraud.
If you have received any invoices from this company, I would urge you to file reports as well to see if we can shut these folks down. They are hoping that at this large volume time for school districts to be purchasing new materials, their fake invoices will just slip through and be paid along with other legitimate ones.
