We, several ex-Sequoia Financial Services employees, thought it prudent to post on the internet some of the underhanded ways we were treated while working for Roy C. du Plessis at Sequoia Financial Services in Glendale, CA. This is a collection agency that, when first hired, appears to treat its employees well. The turnover is extremely high, as they tend to hire young people who will jump when asked, and then ask "how high?" Once you have been there a while, you start to see how things are done. It is completely a company that uses the principle of "do what I say, not what I do...."
We have heard of people being fired for filing Workers Compensation claims, or for filing for disability. NO ONE ever gets unemployment from them as they fight tooth and nail even when it is not applicable. Some people we know, still don't even know the reason they were fired.
Most people who actually have a mind of their own, make it up the ladder in a short amount of time. But, once you understand how things work around there, and if you are not a "yes man", you do not last long.
Then, when you are fired, you are TOLD not to tell anyone in the company about what happened to you and anyone in your department that may know you have been terminated is also counciled to keep silent.
Clients are told that Sequoia is capable of ANY criteria (which they are not, until they actually get the account, and then scramble to get their ducks in a row).
Maybe there are some companies left where the CEO can fire you on a whim, but in this day of big business and corporate oversight, it can't possibly last long if they intend to continue growing.
Bottom line is it is an awful feeling knowing that if the CEO happens to be constipated that day, you could be fired!
If they treat their employees badly, why would anyone want to do business with them?

ANYTIME ANYONE EVER tells me they're a "Christian" I put my hand on my wallet and run like hell. I've been in business for 24 years and THAT is one of the one things I've learned to look out for. When I hear THAT term coming from ANYONE, I KNOW They're getting ready to try and screw me over one way or another. That and "Trust me". I actually had one guy tell me "You can trust me, I'm a good christian". I threw him out on his butt. Years ago, Dad had a "good christian family" in one of his rental houses. They refused to pay rent for the last 3 months. In the old days, you couldn't evict someone for 90 days. They moved out on the 89th day. When I went over to have a "chat" with them, they told me they knew the law and there was nothing I could do and they could sue me if I got tough. It was just another lesson with dealing with "good christians" that I'd already learned.

Thanks for the response Cory. You are right. However, in this instance, the company is small (under 100 employees) and the CEO's big thing is that he is "a Christian". He gives a bad name to Christians, as firstly, he has been known to force people into prayer circles (during work of course) and talks about God in his floor meetings. Hey, lots of people are Christians, but don't tell me you love God, then underhandly fire me. Oh well, when Roy du Plessis stands before Saint Peter, I don't think he will take "oh, well...that was business", for an answer."

"Maybe there are some some companies left where the CEO can fire you on a whim but in this day of big business and corporate oversight, it can't possible last long if they intend to continue growing". I don't know what planet you live on but look around you. Tell that to the hundreds of thousands of folks who have been and are being layed off here in the US.
The CEO's that are making the biggest bucks are doing so BY laying off the largest numbers of employees in history. Home Depot, Humana, Dell, USAA just to name a few, of the thousands of companies that some CEO has fired hundreds if not thousands "on a whim". And what's worse, they're being rewarded for their actions by the directors for doing it. What did they pay the home depot guy(CEO) when he left? $40-$50 millon? And now he's at Chrysler getting ready to do the same thing? There is no loyalty at these companies anymore.
What you speak of, is happening all over the country at hundreds of companies. I had it happen to me a couple of times. At sears, at zales. F' them. I got off that treadmill and opened up my own shop. Good luck.
