so I call my bank and they said Shell takes your money and supp will put the money back into your account after 72 hours. How crazy is this, so meanwhile if my kids are hungry, they have to starve because my account says zero???? no way is this illegal ? how and why is this happening? totally unfair and what is shell going to give me ? will they be feeding my children or will they provide me with a gift card to feed my kids? what a disgrace.

You decided to buy your hungry kids ice cream. What's for breakfast? Pie?

When you use your debit card to pay at the pump, the gas station has no idea how much gas you are going to put in your car. They put an authorization in for maybe $75 or $100 and this puts a hold on your funds for that amount. What is supposed to happen is that when you finish pumping the actual amount gets deducted from your account and the rest of the money is freed up. Some neanderthals use software that fails to remove the hold. The hold will stay in place until your bank decides that the transaction really is complete.
There is no easy way to determine in advance which stations do this. I recommend that if you are low on funds (and who isn't) is to go inside and ask for a specific dollar amount of fuel. This should avoid the entire hold-at-the-pump scenario.
BTW, my local gas station does an authorization for just $1 when I swipe my card. I think they do this just to verify that the card is valid. I do not know what happens if I pump $50 when I only have $10 in my account.

I'm pretty sure that all gas stations do this when you use a debit card. They hold back 50 or 75 dollars. The best way to prevent this is to either pay cash (go inside and use the ATM) or to use the debit card as a credit card. Then you only get charged for what you actually pump.

Don't pay at the pump

It is actually done the same way at every gas station in America. If you pay at the pump your card is authorized for anywhere from $50 - $100. Since the gas station and the bank does not know how much money you are going to spend they hold on to the money till you are done pumping gas. The gas station releases the money almost immediately (I have had money returned within minutes) but your bank may not process the release for several days.
If you don't want this to happen don't pay at the pump or use a credit card since credit cards usually authorize only $1.
