HICKSVILLE - A Nassau resident says he is out thousands of dollars after hiring a company to make his home more energy-efficient.

Allen Seymour says he paid Sherman Industry of Westbury $35,000 to put a new environmentally friendly geothermal heating and cooling system in his home. He says Sherman put in the underground pipes and that was it.

The plastic pipes are supposed to connect to a heat pump, which Seymour says was never installed. Seymour says that is because Sherman Industry did not get the proper permits from the Town of Oyster Bay. He claims the company has not returned his calls.

Seymour is not the only homeowner who decided to have a geothermal system installed and had problems with the contractor. Julie Ugarte, of Hicksville, says Sherman did install her system, but that it took six months and the company promised her thousands of dollars in rebates that never came through.

Ugarte says she has now found as many as 30 homeowners with similar complaints. The Nassau County Office of Consumer Affairs told News 12 Long Island that it is investigating and has suspended the company's license.

Seymour and other victims say they've contacted the Nassau County District Attorney's Office to see if it will investigate the company as well.

Sherman Industry did not respond to News 12's numerous requests for comment this week.
