I had a pair of shoes that needed to be returned to Shoe Station. My 10 year old daughter, unknowingly took the shoes out of the box to wrap a present for her friend. I figured, "No problem." I shop at Shoe Station all the time; thier friendly, I'm sure it won't be an issue. I walked into the store and spoke with the friendly young clerk. I told her that the shoes" Kill the top of my feet." and that I can't wear them. She says no problem; but because they are not in the box I can only exchange them for something else. I say that's great, thankyou so much. I give her the shoes in the shoe station bag and the receipt and happily begin to browse. Well, after a few minutes, I see a lady begin walking in my direction with my shoes in her hand. I smile as she approaches and I notice that she is looking for the shoes on the display wall. I say, "There they are," and point at the shoes. She immediately becomes hostile and says, "I can't return these shoes. Look at the bottom of them. They are scuffed up and there is no box." (Her voice is cracking and she is beginning to be belligerent at this point) she says, " I'll have your stuff ready at the front for you." I follow her to the counter. I ask, " Why are you so angry?" She smirks at me and says, " I'm just hearing all kinds of excuses, first you wore them, then you didn't wear them, which is it?" Myself, as the customer that doesn't even know who this woman is or where she even came from is confused at this point and thinking, " Is she really going postal over these cheap, no name brand shoes?" I tell her, "First of all, I haven't ever even spoken to you, and secondly, I want you to know that I did not scuff the bottom of those shoes like that; and that obviously someone returned them before I did; and also I was not aware of the 30 day return policy because I never have used it enough to know or care.
I take my shoes, browse for a few more minutes, and leave knowing that myself and the 11 people in my family that shop frequently at this store; will never step foot in Shoe Station again. Not even because of the fact that this company does not stand behind the quality and comfort of thier products and the satisfaction of the customer; but because the company allows an employee to publicly verbally abuse and humiliate a customer. If I would have known that a cheaply made $30.00 pair of shoes was going to create such a horrible occurrence for an obviously troubled employee; I would have saved a lot of time for myself and just thrown them in the garbage. The date of this occurrence was May 31,2012 around 7-8:pm

Manager's Response

I was called to the front to approve a return. The shoes were not in a box, scratched on the bottom and beyond 30 days.
I went to look for them in the wall. They are now clearance shoes. I wanted to compare them to new to see if they would pass. Yes she pointed out where they were. I didn't know she was even the customer who wanted to return them at this point. I said they were too scuffed to be re sold as new. She said she only wore them around the house. I showed her the bottom of the new one and explained that the ones she had showed too much wear and could not be sold as new. (especially in a home made box). She said they hurt her feet though. I said we would have to be able to re sell them as new. Without a box and scratched on the heels like thy were we couldn't take them back. At this point I also noted that we were beyond 30 days as well so there was nothing I could do for her.
She wanted to know why I was so mad and I said I wasn't. I explained I didn't want to argue with her and repeated we couldn't take the shoes back. She SWORE she didn't scratch the bottoms and that someone else must have done it. I just kept my mouth shut as I felt she was trying to bait me. She asked me repeatedly why I was so angry and I kept saying I wasn't.
She browsed a while longer humming to herself.
The only reason i gave her for why we couldn't take them back that she did not have an excuse for was the 30 day return policy. Looks like she covered that one too in her post.

Really?

I am not going to say that the attitude of the manager was 100% right. But it also seems you may be skipping over some very key points that don't go in your favor. Such as why would you mention not being aware of the 30 day return policy if you didn't have the shoes for more than 30 days?
So it sounds like you not only had them for more than 30 days, you tried to return them without a box. The reason you did this is because you said they hurt the top of your feet. How do you know they hurt if you didn't wear them?
Also, if these shoes are so cheaply made why do you and the 11 people in your family keep going back?
