About the car I bought from Champion:

2001 Toyota Corolla LE
4-door
standard amenities, incl. power everything, A/C, leather interior (no CD player, moonroof, or factory alarm system)
approximately 41,000 miles on it when purchased
paid $10,200 for the car at the time of sale (Which I now realize was a mistake!!)
date of purchase - March, 2004
approximately 70,000 miles on it when engine seized

List of complaints:

Car was taken to Champion Toyota for service pertaining to 'check engine' light at LEASE 5 times since date of purchase. The first time the light came on was within 1 month of purchase.

On the majority of those service visits, Champion 'diagnosed' the problem and recommended different solutions for the problem each time. I allowed them to do various work on the car, with the expectation that the light would go off and the problem would be solved. (Each of these visits is documented by receipts and work orders)

The more I drove the car, the more familiar I became with the problem, and eventually concluded that the engine problem revolved around high levels of oil burning/consumption/leaking. On at least 2 occasions I specifically told the Service Mgr. (who has since left Champion) that I was having to put quarts of oil in the car regularly because the oil was registering low on the dipstick. He actually was sympathetic, as apparently Champion sales representatives have been known to sell cars with problems. This can also be verified by the parking attendant at Champion, who I had casual conversations with about the car each time I brought it in.

There was NEVER any explicit communication from Champion Toyota that the problem was 1) so severe that the engine seizing was a possibility, 2) due to any ONE specific thing

The last significant work done on the car was by Peruzzi Toyota. (April or May 05) The service representative there told me that there were engine problems but they couldn't be correctly diagnosed without further testing, etc. This testing was not covered under my warranty, was quite expensive, and frankly I was very skeptical of the entire process, as I had been duped by Champion many times before. (This report is not meant to in any way implicated Peruzzi Toyota. They're a good dealership and provide great customer service.)

On Saturday, August 20th, the car simply shut off and had to be towed to the nearest dealership, which was Champion Toyota. On Monday, August 22, I was informed that the engine had seized and that I needed to replace it in order to be able to drive this car. No conciliatory suggestions were made to give me any recourse or return on my investment.

The dealer claims that I didn't tell them about the problem...then what they hell were they 'diagnosing' and 'repairing', as indicated in the many receipts and work orders I have since March 04? I got oil changes and all that stuff too. There's no way a Toyota's engine should seize in 18 months!

I know that I won't get my whole $10K back. But, I believe that Champion Toyota sold me a car with substantive knowledge that it was defective. Had the problem been diagnosed and addressed in a professional, candid manner, this end result could have been resolved or at least delayed.

I plan to send letters to Sloan Automotive and Champion Toyota and am having my complaint legally reviewed, but I really hope I can solve this with the dealer and without involving a third party.

I'd never buy any car (new or used) from Champion Toyota again, and wouldn't recommend that option to anybody.

Toyota to repay customers with oil-sludge problem
By David Kiley, USA TODAY

DETROIT Toyota acknowledged Wednesday that millions of its cars and trucks could develop a ruinous oil-sludge problem and said it would repay owners who have had to make repairs.

Toyota says the problem is caused by going too long between oil changes, but nevertheless says it is changing the engine design to prevent a repeat.

Affected: 3.0-liter V-6 and 2.2-liter four-cylinder engines in more than 3.5 million 1997-2002 Toyota Camrys, Avalons, Highlanders and Siennas and Lexus ES and RX 300s.

Toyota says it will repay owners for repairs and other related expenses, such as car rentals.

Toyota had been resisting repayment, prompting angry owners to demand arbitration, hire lawyers and vent on the Internet.

Toyota's acknowledgment of a potential problem is significant because of the reputation Toyota and Lexus enjoy for high quality.

"I was a loyal Toyota owner, on my third, but this is my last because of the way they have treated this," says Robin Burpee, a Sienna minivan owner in Mendon, Mich. She spent $5,000 on repairs, car rentals and other expenses.

Lawyers in Georgia and Florida have been gathering steam to seek class-action status for a planned lawsuit against Toyota.

Marketing experts say Toyota's decision is an example of how persuasive the Internet can be. "Where do people go to research their car purchase? The Net," says marketing consultant Paul Franklin.

"I'm sure Toyota hates to see so many complaint sites come up on a Google search of its brand," he says, referring to the Internet search engine.

Toyota spokesman John Hanson acknowledges that the anti-Toyota Internet comments contributed to the decision. But, he says, "It is not an engine defect. We are sure the problem comes from people not changing their oil often enough."

Hanson says the problems have been concentrated where winters are extremely cold and summers are especially humid and among owners who make a lot of short trips. Hanson says the company is making an immediate change to its V-6 engine that will give a wider margin of error if people wait too long to change their oil. A redesign of the four-cylinder already incorporated a similar change.

I am willing to bet that some people in the auto industry would love to have all of this deleted off of the internet.

Watch for the DREADED SLUDGE MONSTER!!

AUTHOR: Charlene - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 15, 2005

Naomi, don't look now, but you may have the dreaded sludge monster!! Do you know anything about it? Do an internet search as there is lots out there about Toyota engine sludge!

The Corolla has been showing symptoms of sludge, but it is not part of Toyota's CSP "Customer Support Program" for engine oil sludge. There are other Toyota models in this same situation....not covered but having the same sludge symptoms.

Corolla owners are reporting high oil consumption and many are reporting engine seizing.

If something does go permanently wrong with your engine, please post your story here. There are many similarly-affected Toyota owners who might still be in the dark! You see, Toyota said it was going to mail out 3.3 million letters to the affected owners, but it did not! Yes, it LIED as a corporation!!

What's worse?!? Toyota is not honoring its own sludge program! Many owners are reporting that the dealerships pretend to know nothing or that they blame them for all the problems in the engine!!

Toyota is up to its old tricks again!! It was pulling the wool over the owners eyes for several years before the whole sludge matter came to the forefront. Now that many of the sites where Toyota owners went to complain are mysteriously down, I guess Toyota feels that there isn't anything to worry about!! NOT SO!! Thousands are still speaking out and looking for others with the same situation.

Champion is redeeming itself

AUTHOR: Naomi - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, October 05, 2005

UPDATE:

Champion has been gracious in providing me with the service I should have gotten in the first place...

I wrote a letter to the dealer detailing my complaint. I was then told that the damage to my car would be covered under warranty, and Champion paid for a rental car for my use during the repairs.

They did have my car for OVER a month, which doesn't really make much sense to me, but, as long as the car was being fixed, I didn't complain.

The check engine light came BACK on 15 minutes after I left the dealership, so, I'm taking it back this week.

All in all, I finally feel like I'm being treated professionally and that my car is running the way it should. I'll update when ALL damage is finally repaired.
