We recently moved into our new home. We have two receivers. One receiver started giving us problems about 3 weeks after we moved in. We had to call the company several times to have them reconnect our service on the receiver in our bedroom.

About 2 weeks ago, the receiver did not work AGAIN. My husband called the company and was told that our service was disconnected because we had tampered with the Smart Card. He told them we had not messed with anything and needed our service reconnected or our receiver looked at. He was told that they cut off about 35,000 receivers a month for tampering and we would not get service again unless we sent them 149.00 dollars to reconnect. We refused, because we did nothing wrong.

Several more phone calls were made, even talking to a "manager". They continued to accuse us of tampering with the receiver. Finally we got a phone number to the coporate office in Colorado. If you try to call the Coporate office, you must know the name of someone to punch in!!!. I finally called on 12/11/01, and the message said if it is an emergency, to stay on the line and I was soon connected with a real voice. I told her what I needed and was connected with a guy name Charles. He was very nice, and I complained about their customer service and being accused of tampering with the receiver. He assured me that someone from technical support would call me in 48 hours to tell me how to return the receiver and they would check it out and then send us another. It has been 48 hours and I have not heard, but will call them again.

I told Charles that their customer service was horrible and I would be looking into connecting to cable as soon as possible. We do not need this hassle every time there is a problem with their equipment. Obviously we have a faulty receiver and had we not been stubborn and persued this, we would be screwed. I will contact you as soon as I hear!! or do not hear from them. I wonder how many months it will take them to evaluate our receiver? FRUSTRATING!!!!!!!

hacking is against the law

AUTHOR: James - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, May 13, 2004

i agree it is against the law to hack a card. their are other ways to work out your problems besides hacking. if you are the end user you face a 2000.00 fine 6 months in the federal prison and a admendment to the fine of up to 100,0000.00. if you are hacking your own card or others you are facing 5 years in federal prison for each card hacked and 500,000.00 fine for each card hacked. plus they will hit you with computer hacking. a couple of years ago a guy in georgia got 15 years and a 1.5 million dollar fine. his house and all his property taken just as in a drug raid. the words " for test purposes only " will not keep the feds from kicking in your door. paying for the programming is awhole lot cheaper thatn paying a lawyer 10,000.00. you need to stop what you are doing. if you dont think they wont come after you . you are very mistaken.

No matter how badly you feel you were treated, there is no justification for stealing

AUTHOR: Joe - (U.S.A.)

Caution... The use of "hacked" cards to receive free satellite tv programming is illegal.....
If you purchase the equipment you could be sued by the company that you are stealing programming from...If you think that you won't be caught, think again. If you want tv for free, buy an antenna.

No matter how badly you feel you were treated, there is no justification for stealing.

They filed the following rebuttal to the above Rip-Off Report:

Their email: no@thanks.com
Their name: Rather not say

Their relationship to the company: Consumer Suggestion

Rebuttal:
You were more then likly hit by the Nov ECM that was sent down by Dish Network to kill your reciver if it was found to be hacked. There is a way to repair it using a JTAG interface and rewirte your EEPROM with the correct code. I was once a Dish Network PAYING user and finaly got tired of all thier BS and went into 'testing'. Now I get over 500 stations, on two recivers for free. Why? Because I was at a dead end with them, tired of fighting and getting my money back with free TV, no thanks to them!

I recemend you visit www.sattech.net and also get your stuff from
www.superdish.tv (very good suplyer!). There are many other sites out there too (www.sat50.com I think is a list for them).

if they won't replace your reciver (this needs to be done for it to ever work again by them as a chip on your reciver has been damanged), buy a JTAG interface. That will get you working again.

If you want to get them back, buy an AVR3 (the Plus model is very nice) for each system.

WARNING: you should lock your TSOP and EEPROM chips if your going to 'test' this, information can be found on the sites.

Still dealing with the Smart Card

AUTHOR: - ()

POSTED: Friday, December 21, 2001

12/21/01 We were to hear within 48 hours and as I expected, it did not happen. on 12/17 - I contacted the customer service dept. by email. On 12/18 I received an email from Julie and she said that she did not know a Charles that worked at the coporate office, but that she would have technical service contact me.

Later that day, I had some time, so I called the coporate office again and talked with Leslie. She was also very nice, and I again complained about their sorry customer service dept and told her the problem. She said that someone named Nick would be contacting me shortly. I told her that I really did not believe it, but had no choice. About 2 hours later, Nick did call and said that he was sending a new receiver with instructions on how to return the old one. He said we should receive in in 3 - 4 days. I will be shocked if this happens, and will let you know the rest. This has taken way too much time and way too many phone calls and emails.
