I went in to Smart Style in Spencer, Iowa for a simple 12.95 haircut, which I've been getting there for more than 2 years. After the stylist, Diana, trimmed my hair, which took no more than 8 minutes, she started blow drying my hair. I didn't think anything about it. I didn't ASK her to blow dry my hair, she didn't ask me if I wanted it dried, and she certainly didn't tell me it would cost extra for this. But this time, when I went to pay my bill, it was $17.05. I asked why it was so much. She informed me that it was extra to blow-dry my hair. In the 2 years I've been going there this has never happened before, and it was very sneaky of her to pad the bill that way. I paid it, but wish now I'd made my complaint on the spot.

Instead of getting upset about having to pay an extra $4 and change, why don't you just let it go, use this trivial little problem as a learning experience, and tell the lady not to blow dry your hair next time?

I am a smart style employee, my salon does not just dry someone with out asking, but does charge for it if asked to do it. The price for drying the hair is posted on the sign in front of all smart styles. When a customer asks the price, we are sure to tell them that conditioner, blow drying, and everything is charged seperately. Stylists are paid on commission. Why shouldn't they be paid more for a complete blow out and style than just cutting and letting you go wet. It often takes me three times as long to dry hair, than it does to cut the hair. It is more work. You wouldn't expect a prime rib to cost the same as a hamburger steak at a restraunt, even though the menu states the prices. Why would you expect different from a salon? You get what you pay for, and the sign clearly states that a shampoo, cut, and dry costs more than a shampoo and cut.

but at the time of the report our haircuts were 13.95, and the pricing goes something like this, haircut blow, style short 16.95 and on up as your hair gets longer. plus you have to add a dollar at the time if she shampooed and conditioned your hair. She should have told you that she was going to blow dry your hair and that it would cost extra, we are taught in school any extra add on service adds to our paycheck, in order to make commission we must add on to a service, and i am sorry that you felt ripped off, but it cost money to run the business to supply, water pay rent, and we are only trying to make a living but in her case we are only doing what the corpration asks of us.

If you didn't ask for your hair to be blown dry, and you haven't ever gotten this done before, then speak up and say so! I am a stylist, and if one of my clients does or doesn't want something done to their hair then I expect them to tell me so (respectfully, of course). Even when I get my hair done, if the stylist is doing something I choose not to have done, I politely tell her so. That's all you have to do. We're not psychics.
