We started service in our new home in November. We never recieved a bill because they were sending the bills to the wrong address. We made a guestimate payment in January of $200 and then 2 weeks later the electric was shut off in our house. We called and they said we owed $700. We told them we didn't recieve a bill and they made us pay the $700 to get it turned back on. again we didn't recieve a bill and electric was shut off in March. We called again to compain of not recieving bills or shut off notices and they said we owed $1200 and we had to pay an additional $700 to get it turned back on and they reprinted our past 4 months of bills and resent them in the mail. We recieved them a week later to discover our monthly bill went from $300 to $600 a month when our consumption had not increased at all. We asked our neighbors who have the same heating/electric systems and their bills never went above $250 a month with the same Snapping Shoals electric company. The adjacent neighbors are stay at home moms and are home all day. We work full time and have our heat and appliances unplugged all day until 7pm therefore using a lot less electricity than our neighors yet our bills are coming in around $600+ a month.

Then we also noticed additional charges totaling $450 over the past four months. When we ask them to exlpain these extra charges we aren't given any direct answers. THere is no detail explanation of per Kilowat charges, just a random total dollar amount each month. We started monitoring our daily meter readings and were only using 80-160 a day yet their readings are showing 230-300 per day which is almost double our actual readings. We have called 2-3 times a week to dispute the charges and they refuse to help us. We can't afford to pay $600 a month for electric and they can't prove to us that these charges are legitimate or that maybe our meter was broken or moving faster than actual. We have a high efficiency electric heat system which should allow us to have a lower electric bill yet they are charging us more. I tried filing a compaint with the state utility commission but because Snapping Shoals is a public company and not government regulated they can't do anything. THey are seriously overcharging us, not sending us bills, then charging additional reconnect fees of $85 and $10 late fees when we are paying on time...but we aren't getting the bills. Its like they intentionally try to get you to miss it, overcharge you and shut you off to force you to pay double to triple your bill. THey are taking advantage of us and we want to sue but want to see if others are having the same problems. Its time we stop being at the mercy of utility companies who can price gouge with no reprecussion.

It's not just Your EMC

AUTHOR: OHara - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, October 21, 2010

Your complaint is fairly common.  EMCs were originally established to provide affordable electric power to rural areas back in the first quarter of the 20th century.  However, they have moved into areas that are not rural and their prices are among if not THE highest of providers in the area.

I lived in Cobb County (Cobb EMC) for many years.  As you probably know, Cobb County is far from rural and has been so for many years.  The Atlanta Journal/Constitution did a report on Cobb EMC back in the early '90's and found that among the three electrical providers in the county, Cobb EMC was by far the highest priced.  BY FAR!

Now, I'm going from memory here but my memory is that for 1,400 KWH, Marietta Board of Water and Lights charged around $47.00 and Cobb EMC charged about $64.00 for the same amount of electricity.  That is not affordable service!

Cobb EMC's excuse was that they were still building out the distribution system and it was expensive.  If you're familar with Cobb County, you know the county was mostly "built out" by that time and all of Cobb EMC's distribution lines were already in place.

Cobb EMC has been in legal trouble many times for their practices.  I suspect the other EMCs look at them as an example of how they can abuse their customers since Cobb is the largest and most successful EMC in the country.
