We purchased tickets to Cancun, Mexico for 7/15-7/22. Within the last couple of weeks there has been nummerous reports about the swine flu outbreak which is being acquired in Mexico and brought back home. It is spreading rapidly in the U.S. Appartently it is a strain that the CDC is unfamilar with. This particular type of flu has caused death many cases and is creating somewhat of a panic, not only in Mexico but other coutries as well. Six million masks were passed out to Mexican residents. (Kind of reminds you of SARS.) Although the U.S. hasn't advised against travel to Mexico they are urging you to take precautions. Multiple airlines, including American, United, Continental, US Airways, Mexicana and Air Canada, are waiving their usual penalties for changing reservations for anyone traveling to, from, or through Mexico, but have not cancelled flights.

We decided against going to a country where you have to worry about contracting a virus and dying while on vacation. I contacted Spiritair at their 800 number and asked if we could change our reservations without any penalty because of this health risk. They responded by saying they were not aware of this flu situation and that I would have to pay the penalty of $100 per person. When I asked what planet they were on, I was informed that their call center was in India. (Guess there's no CNN there) Given the heavy accents, communicating was challenging at best. When I asked to speak to someone in the states with more authority they responsed with an adamant no. I googled and found a phone number in Miramar Florida and will be contacting them today.

Needless to say I will never travel on this airline again.

It is obvious that some of the cases in the US originated in Cancun. Mexicans who work in Cancun come from all over Mexico so who know where the flu came from originally. The current administration needs "victims" in order to thrive. The Swine Flu is just what the doctor ordered. I agree that Sprit should have waived the penalty but Spirit is especially known for its non existent customer service. Even Delta is pulling its offshore customer service because of complaints. Frankly I don't understand the big panic over Swine Flu. There may not be a way to prevent it but if you get it it is treatable. Like any serious flu tiny babies and the elderly are more susceptible I understand. Nobody has told me what the economic level of the people in Mexico who died was. People who have inadequate health care in rural areas can die from anything .

There have been 149 deaths in Mexico and there are about 40 known cases of Swine Flu in the US.

Are you aware there are about 30,000 deaths every year in the US alone from our regular flu? It doesn't stop you from living or traveling here.

Please try to put these things in perspective. It's correct that the news media does everything they can to panic people.

Think! people, think!

Your flight isn't scheduled for nearly 2 1/2 months. You need to quit watching so much CNN. It's their job to get you to panic (so you'll watch even more). In case you're not over 40, Google swine flu and 1976. Even if the flu does turn out to be a problem, by mid-July, Mexico will probably be the safest place to go.
