My wife and I went there in early afternoon on December 26, 2013, with my daughter to assist our daughter to purchase her 2010 Scion TC at its lease end. The salesman seemed less than thrilled to assist us and went to someone presumed to be his boss to ask questions regarding this proposed transaction. He quickly advised us that the first step would be to complete a safety inspection at a cost to my daughter of $50.
I have purchased vehicles previously at lease end and had never heard of such a requirement. When asked why she would need a safety inspection, we were advised by the salesman that it was required because the dealer was purchasing the vehicle in order to sell it to my daughter, and could not sell a car that could not pass a safety inspection. I immediately got on the phone to Toyota of Greensburg, where we had originally leased the car three years earlier. While I was on hold, waiting to ask them about this mysterious "safety inspection", the price of the inspection suddenly became $200.
At that point, I told my daughter and wife that we were leaving and told the salesman and manager "no thanks, we will not be paying a safety inspection fee." As we were walking out the door, the manager yelled at us, in front of the entire staff, that we would not find a better deal anywhere as every other dealer in Pittsburgh charges $500 for the inspection.
We walked out and drove to Toyota of Greensburg. We were treated with respect and kindness throughout my daughter's purchase of her Scion lease vehicle. Not once did anyone ever mention a safety inspection nor was one completed. Needless to say, my daughter was not charged for such an inspection.
In my opinion, the manager and salesman at Spitzer Toyota were attempting to fraudulently inflate the cost of purchasing a vehicle at the lease end solely for personal gain. I am disgusted with them and their dealership for allowing it to happen. I would never purchase a vehicle from Spitzer Toyota.
We have purchased a number of vehicles from Toyota of Greensburg and will not hesitate to make the drive from Pittsburgh in the future. I want to make it clear that I am not complaining about Toyota. I do, however, hope that Toyota takes action against Spitzer and Spitzer's employees for these acts.
