I received a letter from Cavalry Portfolio Services saying they had purchased for collection an account from Sprint Wireless that belonged to me. Said I owed $729.49. I do have an account with Sprint, have been employed with them for over 26 years, and do currently have an account with them, but this account is up-to-date. I have repeatedly requested proof that I opened this account with them, and have received no proof at all. I have called Sprint, and they will not take my calls.
I called and complained to Cavalry and they sent me a Fraud Statement of Dispute form to fill out including requests that I send copies of my SS#, Drivers License, etc with the form. I have done this twice. This has been going on for 3-4 years.
I also checked my credit report and they will remove it, then somehow they are showing up on my credit report again and again, as an account under collection.
I have written them a letter back requesting that the info be withdrawn from my credit report as well as filing complaints with the FTC, Florida Attorney General and the Better Business Bureau.
WHat else can I do and how long is it going to take to clear up my credit report?

The basic rules when dealing with a debt collector.

Donald,
It's all in WHAT you write, and HOW you send it. Only one communication is required when you get a collection notice. It is called a DEBT VALIDATION request, and it needs to be sent by certified mail, return reciept requested. Put the certified# on the letter itself, and keep a copy for your records. This proves WHAT you sent.
In this letter clearly dispute the debt and demand to see whatever you allegedly signed to create it, as well as a full account history and itemization of charges.
NEVER speak to any debt collector on the phone! NEVER!
And NEVER provide them ANY information they do not already have, as indicated on a collections letter!
YOU never have to prove you don't owe a debt, THEY always have to prove that you do, and you are not required to help them do it!
And, forget the BBB. they are totally useless and have no legal authority to make anyone do anything. The FTC has sole authority over debt collectors which is spelled out in the FDCPA.
As far as credit bureaus go, it takes only one letter sent by the means above to get an item off your report. In this dispute, clearly state that as per your rights under the FCRA, you want to have copies of all correspondence used in the dispute/validation procedure. Failure to do so will result in an immediate lawsuit.
This is all very easy to do, and it certainly doesn't take 3 years. It takes about 45 days.

Contact the BBB!

Dear Donald,
I'm currently going to court w/ Cavalry over a Sprint bill. I had been trying to get a hold of Sprint w/ no luck & finally I wrote a nasty letter to the BBB about Sprint & how they have violated my rights according to the FTC. What do you know 2 weeks later Sprint was calling me wanting to know what they could do to help. So if you really need to speak to some one at Sprint this is the best way to get a hold of some one over there.
Don't get me wrong they were not able to help me, but maybe they can help you with your situation.
To every one else out there reading this if a Debt collector requests your SS# or a copy of your driver's license I suggest that you don't give it to them. They don't want to help you all they want is your money. You are just giving them the most important information they need to garnish your wages or sale your identity to someone else.
I also have a report listed here on Rip Off Report, the below is my Title
Cavalry Portfolio Services, Cavalry SPV I, Battling Cavalry Phoenix Arizona
I will update it later w/ any other information I find out from Sprint's Legal Department
Good Luck,
Mesa, Arizona
