I started an account with Square Up over two years ago for my small home business. I only swiped about 4 transactions with customers that I knew pretty well. The money was deposited in my account minus the 3.75% for the agreed upon fee. All was fine...I thought! I was a few months behind in reconciling my bank account and when I got to my February 2013 bank statement, I was quite surprised to see a debit for a little under $200.00.
I called my bank and was told that Square Up (Now called Square) had put a hold on those funds and there was not explanation given. I then set out to contact Square. Not surprisingly, I found there was no phone number in which to call customer service so all I could do was email them. It was a couple of weeks that I had not reply, so I sent another email. I finally received this reply:

What YOU don't understand

YOU must be an employee of this cesspool company. This has nothing to do with ME not taking care of MY obligations, this has everything to do with this company taking MY money on a charge back and not even notifying ME that they were doing it to give me the opportunity to respond to the chargeback. I happen to manage a very successful doctors practice and when a patient does a charge back, we are notified of that and are able to respond to the chargeback to which I have always won over the patient who received the services. I was not notified of the chargeback, therefore, Square is at fault for not notifying me. Regardless, if they can sleep at night knowing they still to this day have not responded to my inquiry other than "thanks for writing to us" and nothing more, I can certainly live without the money.

How??

How are THEY the bad guys when its one of YOUR customers?? One of YOUR customers has made a request against a payment that YOU received. If you have only run 3 or 4 people then YOU SHOULD KNOW who that customer is!!! YOU can stop playing the victim because square is only doing what YOU agreed to in the terms and conditions. If the money was returned to YOUR customer then guess what, its what you AGREED TOO!!!!!! YOU cannot NOW sit there and bash square for only doing what YOU have told them to do. That's sour grapes on YOUR part and YOUR fault for NOT taking care of your financial obligations in the time frame needed!!! You are talking February!!!! Its OCTOBER!!!!! So due MAINLY to YOUR INABILITY to do tasks in a timely manner is what has caused this!! Had you spotted this issue BACK in February YOU would have had a better idea who the customer was. I would suggest to you that you READ what you have agreed to FULLY!!! That way YOU are informed as to ALL of your rights with THAT particular company. Maybe stay off the web as well. Its CLEAR that YOU accept NO RESPONSIBILITY and continuously seek others to take the fall for YOUR mistakes. Its VERY CLEAR in your own words that you CHOOSE to NOT ACCEPT YOUR PART IN ALL OF THIS!!!!!

How to protect against Square chargebacks
AUTHOR: Kiel - ()

This happened to my in 2011. I got a chargeback and could not find the customer in my data base. Square provided no identifying info for the transaction. I never got paid. Since that time, when processing Square transactions, I put the name and phone number of customer in the description on transaction. It has not happened again. I am not defending square. The fact that, even now, 2 years later and you still can't call them on the phone, proves that they suck. I would like to warn people about Merchants Choice - Woodforest National Bank out of Tesas. They promised me $10 per month fee and now they are charging my $47.95. Trying to cancel and they keep debiting my account.

Square Is Not What You Think

To Square users or potential new Square users: Square is an aggregator. As such you do not have a true merchant account. There is no or very little evaluating the risk before the Square account is set up. This is why this is happening to you and others. They are evaluating it on the back end. Of course this does not help you and what make matters worst there is little or no customer service. And to top it off in most cases it will cost you more to use Square.
Square works for the very rare occasionally user with very low tickets. Solution is to get a true merchant account. Look for an independent representative. Get references and look for a Certified Payments Professional (CPP). You can find them by searching the internet. Avoid going to your bank for processing credit cards as they will charge you too much. Avoid contacts. I hope this helps. Ray at Tampa Bay Merchant Services.
