It is curious that Stanford Who's Who is so reluctant to communicate their offers in writing. What are they afraid of? In my opinion their business practices are dubious at best and in layman's terms I would use the word fraudulent.

Once I started to realize how they operate and what little value they actually offer, I decided to terminate my membership but hadn't done anything about it until I received a phone call asking to confirm my credit card number so they could charge me $199 for something else. The "chappy" representing Stanford Who's Who went out of his way to make me feel like I had wanted and already agreed to whatever it was he wanted to ship. I clearly had not, unless it was included in the original $99 trial membership. After some less than professional words from me, he hung up. And I decided it was time to communicate my decision to terminate the membership. Here is my first communication.

To whom it may concern:

Please terminate, effective immediately, my trial membership in Stanford Who's Who. Furthermore, understand that you are NOT authorized to bill my credit card for any additional charges.

It was with some reluctance that I accepted the offer for a one year trial membership at $99, particularly where you provided nothing in writing stating the terms of the offer. For my $99 I will accept that as a lesson learned. Never EVER accept an unsolicited offer over the telephone unless it is presented clearly in writing.

Upon receipt of your membership package I learn that I am supposed to start paying $9.95 per month to continue the membership even before the one year trial has run its course. I reject that offer.

Today I received a phone call from someone in shipping at Stanford Who's Who asking to confirm my credit card number so that another $199 could be charged. I did not agree to that charge.

As for membership benefits, I went to your website when I received the membership package. Part of the site crashed and I tried several times over a period of a few hours. When searching the member list I discover that it is very sparse. For example when searching a fairly large company (20K or more professional employees) where I have some insight, I could only find a half dozen or so members. I could go on but suffice to say that, in my opinion, you do not have a community which is worth paying for membership

Please do not call me on the telephone again for any matter. Should you need any follow up regarding this membership termination, you may communicate in writing at the above address.

Regards,

Andrew Patterson

With no authorization they charge my Visa $288

AUTHOR: Andrew - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, September 07, 2010

After being very clear to Stanford Who's Who that I was not confirming my credit card number and that I was not authorizing any additional charges, this morning I discovered that they have charged me US $288. In addition to contacting Visa to dispute the charge, here is my note to Stanford today.

To whom it may concern, and in particular Blake Davis:

This morning I discovered a charge to my credit card for US $288 from Stanford Who' Who. That charge was absolutely not authorized and I consider it fraudulent.

I ask that you reverse the charge immediately.

If you want to claim that I have authorized the charge, please provide the evidence to me at the above address.

In the meantime, I have contacted Visa and reported this charge as unauthorized. As you are aware, they will perform their own investigation. Furthermore, I authorize Visa to use my affidavit describing your business practices in support of any other customers who need to dispute your fraudulent charges.

Why so afraid of communicating in writing?

AUTHOR: Andrew - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, August 26, 2010

Ignoring my request to not contact me by telephone, I received a voice mail a day after the initial letter was delivered. I replied to that by fax restating my requests including the one to not phone. That was also ignored. Here are my responses to Stanford Publishing regarding those voice mails.

In response to your voice mail of today's date, which I quote:

Hi Andrew, this is Blake Davis over at Stanford Publishing, calling in regards to questions you had with your membership. Please call me when you have received the message. Number to reach me at is 631 650 2140 and my direct extension is 2280. Look forward to speaking to you. Have a great day.

Before your voice mail, I had no questions. Now I do:

  1. What part of please terminate, effective immediately, my trial membership in Stanford Who's Who do you not understand?

  2. What part of you are NOT authorized to bill my credit card for any additional charges do you not understand?

  3. What part of please do not call me on the telephone again for any matter do you not understand?

Let me summarize for your clarity my requests of yesterday:

  • Please terminate, effective August 25, my trial membership in Stanford Who's Who.

  • Stanford Who's Who, Stanford Publishing or any other names you might use, is explicitly NOT authorized to bill my credit card for any additional charges.

  • Please do not call me on the telephone for any matter.

Should you have any problems understanding or fulfilling these requests, you can take it up with me in writing at the above address.

On two separate occasions I have requested, as politely as I could, that you NOT contact me by telephone. Following each of those requests you pick up the telephone and call. In my opinion, that is harassment. And it demonstrates yet again my biggest complaint with Stanford Publishing. That is an unwillingness to put offers and other communications in writing, and an insistence on communicating by telephone using less than honorable tactics.

Every time you demonstrate these dubious business practices of Stanford Publishing, I get more upset. And the more upset I become the more people I tell about my experience.

If you are incapable of communicating with me in writing, then please hire a writer or a lawyer who can represent you. I refuse to talk to anyone from Stanford Publishing on the telephone.

Effective immediately, voice mails from Stanford Publishing will be deleted unheard. Consider them undelivered. That includes the one you left this afternoon.

My requests are very clear. People outside of Stanford Publishing have no trouble understanding. You can save us both a lot of time by simply terminating my membership.
