I received a call from Stanford Who's who (on July 2) claiming that they are a prestiges club for "selected executives, professionals, and entrepreneurs" from around the world. I remember I filed an online application few weeks back for "free" listing but I never intended to join as a member. The lady on the phone (I am not sure that her name is real) said that she is calling to interview me to become a member. She talked for about 30 minutes explaining who they are and asking few questions about me. She used the same marketing tactics listed in previous ripoff reports.

The two things that really made me write this report are:

- She can not and should not charge my credit card for a membership unless I have a printed or electronic copy of all terms and conditions for the membership I am applying to. During the interview I asked her to send me email with the details of the membership before me deciding on anything, she did not give me a clear answer and started to out maneuver the interview to get my credit card details. I am already a member of highly reputable academic/Technical communities. So I expected a package send to me by email or mail after which I would make the final decision to whether I would join or not.

- I was surprised to see that my credit card was charge immediately before even getting conformation by email, a bill or a receipt. I was then very suspicious and I googled their name which I should've done earlier. When I called the next business day to cancel the membership for many reasons including the fact that I might be changing my credit card in a couple of months, they refused to refund the initiation fee back.

I had to call my bank cancel my credit card and file a dispute report to get my money back. I never do a hasty decision like this, but this time I was tricked, as I thought I was dealing with a high esteemed respected club.

thank you ripoff report,

The very same thing happened to me

At 9am EST today, I also received a call.  Having been ripped off in the past by Biltmore Who's Who, I was thankfully savvy enough to terminate the conversation and submitted a report of my own. I also contacted LinkedIn.com and requested that they reconsider running their ads on their website.

Please stay away from this company - from one who has been there before.

I don't understand...

..why people just keep freely giving their credit card information out over the phone to complete strangers, and then are surprised when there are unexpected charges on it.
