went to staples to repair my laptop.  they told me i had to pay for diagnestic 69.99 plus tax. i paid that and they told me it was the hard drive. i asked how much it would be and they quoted me 140.00. i said i could pay that and when i went to pick it up it was a lot more money. they did not inform me all that had to be done. i was totally miss informed. every other place did not charge for diagnostic and the job was a lot cheaper..by over100.00. that is the only reason why i did not return. after all the deductions it was still cheaper elsewhere.

I worked at staples for over six years with the easy tech and as a supervisor and this statement isn't even a little bit true. Our diagnostic tools consist of PC Doctor and malware bytes along with eset and iolo pc tune up tools. All of these programs are completely legitimate and there is no "time bomb virus" put onto computers. We scan the hardware wih pc doctor and the software with malware bytes.

as far as the money issue is concerned a customer should never have to be surprised by the price of fixing a computer. What The 69 dollar fee was there in case we did work on the pc and the custoner decided to take it back with no work HOWEVER it should have been refunded once the customer paid for the ACTUAL PC work (the hard drive install). What probably happened was this

69 - diag fee

new hare drive - 80

ibstall fee - 40

windows OS install fee- 100

data backup from old hard drive - 69

the tech refunded the original diag fee and what was left was the 140 for the work and the rest for the hardware itself. yes it is more overpriced than other PC repair ships but staples has the insurance to pay you back if they screw up your system while mrs. Brown'so son down the street does not. Im all for local businesses and they absolutely should havbe shared the price details BEFORE doing the work but the price is what it is bevause if they screw it all up its not a "too bad I can't buy you a new one" situation.

i am completely sympathetic toward you. that "diagnostic" was actually a time bomb that releases a virus into your computer. then when it happens, usually within 90 days, they take for granted that you will return to them to have it fixed/reset. the techs don't know that their diagnostic is doing this, they are just instucted to run it. The regional/district office DOES know about their dirty little program. So when you go back to the store, they are really sincere in telling you that they don't know why. just stay away from there. you see this is what happens in corporate america. No more free enterprise for the small "mom & pop" decent shops. They have been destroyed by the corporations which are only concerned with $$$. not customer satisfaction. customer service is servicing the customer on the store's terms, not the customer's. I would take the computer & have someone that has a legitimate small computer business & have them run a complete scan on it for whatever they may have planted in it. I know this because they had me on their "merry-go-round" every 90 days for about 18 months, but i was on medication at the time (post surgery) & didn't realize it. I went back & looked at all the sales receipts & they were all within 90-120 days of each other! amazing! WATCH OUT, more fraud is out there online....
