I was contacted by Starr Law Group stating they could help me with a loan modification since we are behind on our mortgage. They told me I should not be paying my other bills and should be paying my mortgage but said they would help me. The cost was going to be $879.00 to file the first set of paperwork, then $700 a month for three months after that. They told me not to make my mortgage payments and that I wouldn't have to until March. I thought I read somewhere that companies helping to do loan modifications were not supposed to charge a fee but I thought OK this is an attourney. My first payment was to come out on a certain day. We split the payment over two days. The first payment did not come in and other bills were processed in my account. I did pull out extra money to pay the second payment. Also they made all these promises to keep in contact with me during the process, never called me once until they payment didn't go through. SO, today my daughter had to go to the hospital because she was sick and I had buy 4 perscriptions for and I had to use some of the money I had put aside to make the Starr payment. I called them when I got back from the hospital to set up payment arrangements. I offered to pay what I had today, another payment in a few days and then the rest including the 700 at the end of the month. They himmed and haughed about if the could do it. Finally this Michael Chambers who acts like he is this big shot at Starr Group said he would take my payment but I had to give the info to TJ and TJ was on the phone and he would call me back. In the mean time I made some phone calls and did find out you are not supposed to pay up front for loan modifications and you are still supposed to make your mortgage payments. I get the rude message from Michael Chambers that they won't take my payment arrangements and will have to call my mortgage company and reverse my paperwork they started. He said obviously I can't afford my house and then says "Not a nice Christmas Present". They obviously don't give a rip about people and are only out to make a buck. I'm putting them on every website I can find as a rip off and bad service!

Recourse for Starr Law Group's actions

Go to the Florida Bar Association right now. Look online for the form they have for complaints about attorneys in Florida. File a complaint with the Bar. Others have and your complaint will add weight to others. Any time someone offers to modify your mortgage terms -- and it is not the lender -- it is probably a scam. If they want money before they do any work (whether you signed a "contract" or not) this is illegal in all states.
If the scammer is an attorney or law group you can file a complaint with the Bar Association for the state in which the attorney is located. If you do not get satisfaction, you can file for funds to cover your losses with the Bar Association Client Restitution Fund. All state Bar Associations have them. It's easy to get the information online.
If you are in Wisconsin I can give you some help since that is what I work on. I work with a community organization that does not charge the client any fee. I don't think there is any way to send private messages here and you don't want to put any personal information here. There are adverts running now on 12 with the mayor B. speaking about scams like this. You can get the agency name from there. Or from the mayor's office.
Best of luck. I hope you get some or all of your money back. I also admit I like to see these ascams shut down.
