When I hired Starving Students, I assumed it was students working through college. Turns out, it is just a name. They hire from the same pool as every other moving company...so far, nothing to be UPSET over. I explained my situation over the phone, talked about the size of my house, heavy commercial size appliances, lots of books and MUST have at least 3 movers, agreed on a price, set a start time.

The day arrived, the movers didn't. Three hours later and three messages left with Starving Students...they didn't say they were closed on Saturdays and have no contact over the weekend, the 2 movers arrived. I explained that I had paid for 3, needed 3 and showed them the house. They spent the next hour on the phone discussing "my situation" with a supervisor and told me it would be more money. I just wanted the job done. I said I asked for 3 movers and would not pay a cent more.

The 2 movers gave me greif for the rest of the day and had the nerve to quit at 8pm...with more stuff left to be moved. They came back the next day...moved the remaing stuff...unloaded everything except the entertainment system (big screen t.v. and component system). Turned to me and said "you better be giving a good tip, and you have to sign this..." (the release form). I said "when I inspect my boxes, look at the obvious damage done to my Viking stove and refridgerator, make note of the problems...then I will sign."

They held my stuff on the truck untill I listed the damages...the whole time telling me not to worry about it that it is just a formality and I can always make a claim at a later date...

Well, let me tell you, with the documented release and the quotes on repairs and the photos of the damage and every i dotted and t crossed, I got a letter from their insurance saying NO. "We reviewed your complaint and found it ..." blah blah, blah. I have never been so mistreated in all my years. I will never do business with them EVER again and suggest anyone thinking of using a moving company remember these tricks and don't give them an inch...

Starving Student rap sheet

AUTHOR: anti - ()

POSTED: Thursday, August 22, 2002

Thanks for the warning. I had similar romantic idea about them: imagining hard working students. As I learned, once upon a time - in 1977 - they WERE starving college students. For the later history go to the California Public Utilities Comission web site. You can read about the repeated investigations regarding their practices... Very educational...
