I got home from work and had a message from the toll free Bankatlantic branch. I was shocked to learn I was -900 dollars. I asked why my branch never notified me and they said they didnt know! I didnt know I would be allowed to use my debit card if I had insufficient funds! They never told me that when I started my account. I have heard if recently 2 of my friends had same thing happen. It isn;t right! I went into bank and talked to someone who told me they would take 64.00 off. I told her my friend had half of it removed because they didnt know they did it either. Then I left, went back and asked to talk to the manager.
Stephanie was very arrogant. I went to sit down. I am a nurse and believe in confidentiality. She screamed I dont have a desk! and laughed at me. She was talking very loud trying to embarrass me! I told her I didnt know what happened and asked if more of charges could be removed. She said I think 64.00 is plenty generous. Everyone was laughing and knew I had neg. balance! Then she said why did u use your card over and over?? I said I told u I didnt know! She said u cant tell me u dont know how much money u have in the bank? She said I know how much I have! I was so embarassed. Customers and staff were laughing. I said I will never recommend this bank to anyone and went to leave. Stephanie yells Good for You!!!!!!!!
I came home upset and crying. My son was mad. He went back but she had left. Another teller talked to him and gave him Stephanies card. She is very unprofessional and I'm sure she treats other customers bad too. I think Bank Atlantic is definitely a rippoff and should be investigated!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you.

This is predatory banking practice. They actually survive doing this business and it should be the opposite. I will never recommend this bank to anyone and I would warn everyone that even considers opening an account there.

Reminds Me

This reminds me of one of my old girlfriends. She figured as long as she had checks, she had money. It didn't matter if she had any money in her account or not. She'd just continue to write out checks. Kind of like the OP, she never had a clue how much money she had or didn't have. As long as the OP has a card, she has money. I mean really, didn't you ever stop to think about where all that extra money was gonna come from? IF I had around $800 in the bank and I'd already spent $1,700, wouldn't anybody in their right mind start to wonder? I can understand overspending by $10 or $20, but $900?

"..I said I told u I didnt know! She said u cant tell me u dont know how much money u have in the bank?"
Your bank is not your personal accountant. If you fail to do basic math, which if you are a nurse I am sure you are more than capable of, to keep track of your purchases it does not matter what bank you go to. You WILL be hit with overdraft fees.
"..I was so embarassed.."
I am sure you were...Because deep down you know it is your mistake. I bet that she was not the only one making a scene and throwing what looked like a tantrum. So take this as a lesson learned. You MUST keep track of your own balances and if you can't, cut up the Debit card and go back to using cash. While the OD Fees can be quite a bit of money, they are also easily avoided by not spending more than you have.

Stop blaming the bank and take some responsibility for your actions
You are a nurse - so what that has nothing to do with your lack of financial judgement
Grow up

Where is your responsibility in this matter?

Since when did it become the responsibiliy of the bank to inform you when your account is overdrawn? Your an adult and need to keep an accurate check register.
The lady at the bank doesn't have the right to talk to you that way and if you feel that she was truly in the wrong report her to a supervisor.

You agreed to maintain a positive balance.

When you sign up for an account, you agree that YOU will maintain a positive balance or be subject to fees. You agreed to maintain a positive balance and by going negative, you gave them permission to charge you the fees. They want the fees so why should they stop something (like overdrawing your account) after you gave them permission to do so (by using your card)?
Basically when you overdraft and refuse to pay the fees that you previously agreed to pay, you are taking advantage of the bank. If someone took advantage of my employer, I would be rude and embarass them too. You stated you will never go back. I'm sure they don't want you back.
Don't get me wrong, I hate banks. They are definitely out for racking up as many fees as they can. However, I am sick of people crying that the bank let them go negative. YOU authorized them to do so by signing that credit card slip or using your pin.

I can tell you whose fault and problem this is. All you have to do is look deeply into the mirror and the person you see in the reflection is whose fault this is.
The bank is not responsible for the balance in your account - you are. You are responsible for knowing how much money you have and what is in your account. Even my 11 year old daughter, who has her own account, knows how much is in her account - to the penny - and how much she can spend from it. If I worked for a bank and you came in with that sorry of a story - I would have little sympathy for you as well. The worst part is - even if you withdrew every dime from the bank, you would do the same thing at the next bank, and the one after that.
Please take as much time as necessary to learn something about this experience and about your finances; in fact if I had been there, I would have asked for your debit card - so I could snip the thing to shreds in order to protect you from yourself. Your report has to be one of the most irresponsible reports I have ever read on this website.....

The old saying "Ignorance of the law is no excuse" fits here. HOW can you NOT know what you have in the bank? How can you let things go to the point of being $900.00 over drawn?
She shouldnt have been disrespectful........but I have a hunch you werent exactly meek and mild mannered here either. Id also bet you dont keep an accurate check register and balance that thing OFTEN.
The bank didnt rip you off.....you did it yourself....and in flying colors no less.
Buck up.......pay it and learn
