Beware, Dr. Mogul charges $55,000! Bilateral Bunionectomy and removal of corns for both feet cost more than 3 times the average rate-even for NYC. Dr. Mogul charges $55,000!

The staff and Dr. Mogul are VERY nice and professional. I inquired as to whether they accepted my insurance (Cigna) and Sylvia looked at my card, pointed to an area at the base and said, "Although we don't take Cigna, you have the "multi-plan" coverage written here on your card and we have a contract with them, so you are all set!" I was so glad to be finally taking care of my painful feet that being "all set" was all I needed to hear.

When my insurance balked about paying, Sylvia asked me, "...did you yell at them and give them a hard time? They respond to that." I told her I did/would not. When I asked about the price, I was so shocked, I cried. Although I accept responsibility for not exercising due diligence by asking the cost before having the surgery, the correct course would have been for them to let me know [in addition to "being all set"] that this procedure costs $55,000. They probably knew I would have headed for the door.

After multiple attempts to obtain payment via my insurance to no avail, the office dropped the price to $20,000. After doing my research and the homework I should have done prior to the surgery, I see the usual cost is about $5-7k per foot. I offered 15k and settled on $16,566.00 that is including the $1,285 my insurance did paid. I even have out-of-network coverage at 70%/30% but was told by Cigna [in not so many words] that the price was too ridiculous to pay...even at 70%!

Pain management afterwards was awful and I am still having pain in my L great toe. Sometimes the pain and numbness is so bad, I consider going to the ER but I live in the Virgin Islands and fear that would make matters worse. My R foot is somewhat deformed. I still cannot wear nice shoes. I keep thinking I haven't given it enough time but the surgery was 4 months ago. I am probably looking at more surgery to correct these issues but I know where I'm NOT going!

Angry Phone Call

AUTHOR: - ()

POSTED: Wednesday, September 16, 2015

I received a phone call today from Dr. Mogul.  I truly thought it was a follow-up to see if things had improved or to discuss my experience and areas that could be improved upon for future patients.  He bagan by telling me he was "miffed!"  We ended up arguing and I stood firmly by my reviews and what had occurred.  He went on about me "bashing" his practice.  I eventually hung up on him.  I have always been self-conscious about my feet but posting these pictures anyway-that is how upsetting and important this is.  I am still having pain in my L foot.  I cannot wear nice shoes comfortably and the dorsal part of my L foot is still swollen.  One of the x-rays taken after surgery revealed that one of the screws he placed had come out a little.  He told me not to worry about it.  Personally, I think the screw is causing this but I am giving it more time to see if it improves.  The right foot is deformed.  The pinky toe is notably far from the other toes and I have to either tape the toe or manually manipulate my foot into a shoe.
