I was a Suncom customer for six months. During that time, I was on what Suncom calls their "Unplan", which involves no minutes--there is unlimited talk time for a set monthly fee. However, I had friends that I would send text messages to, which cost extra, and Suncom also offered Internet service on the phone, which I did use.

As a result, my bill was always higher than the standard rate for my plan, but I paid the bill every month. Around the first of June, my phone suddenly stopped working, so I called customer service to find out why. I was told by an account rep that they had disconnected my phone because 50 percent or more of my usage was on a network other than Suncom's! I live in the country, and after getting Suncom service, I discovered that they had extremely poor cellular reception while I was on the Suncom signal. However, my phone would automatically switch over to a Cingular signal, and the service would be extremely better. I had no control over that--the phone chose the best receptor. I was also told by the account rep that I could not EVER get Suncom service again, even a pay-as-you go plan! I had another account rep tell me that my phone was disconnected because of excessive roaming charges.

I never went out of the calling area, and I NEVER got a roaming message on my cell phone. Since Suncom doesn't offer any itemized bills, I could never see for myself if I had roaming charges. I think that what they did, cutting my phone off like that with no advance warning, and for such a pathetic reason, is just that--pathetic, bad customer service, bordering on customer abuse. I was also told, by the very person who helped me get the Suncom service, that they had done the same thing to another customer, and that that customer was in the process of suing them. If any attorneys visit this site, please tell me if that would be viable cause for a lawsuit against this company.

#3 UPDATE EX-employee responds

Non Network Usage

AUTHOR: Dee - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, July 08, 2006

I am an ex-employee of SunCom. SunCom has terms of the contract that must be read by every consumer that subscribes with SunCom. In the contract, it should state that SunCom reserves the right to cancel service if usage if more than %50 out of their network. The Unplan is designed for those that are in the network. At each store location, there is a map that displays the network. SunCom information on the customer is contingent on the information that the customer supplies.

Advice: Take a look at the coverage map in the SunCom stores, or simply log onto SunCom.com. If you are not covered in the area, then search elsewhere for a telecommunications company that will best suit your needs.

#2 UPDATE EX-employee responds

they cannot charge you etf

AUTHOR: Joseph - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, June 29, 2006

in the terms and conditions it clearly states that they can charge you etf if you cancel service before the contrast is fullfilled. However, since you are off the network they reserve the right to cancel service and release you from the contract. it is costing them more money by keeping you.

So just ignore the reps at the call center. Most are under strict guidelines and talk time to get the money and leave.

hope this helps...
