I answered the media call for Truck Drivers as advertisements were all over the internet. I Filled out an online job ad for "truck driving" and was contacted by Swift Trucking about their top of the line driving schools.
Here is where I should have recieved a warning! My first recruiter vanished after six weeks of negotiation. My second recruiter changed my Truck driving School from Portland, Oregon to Lewiston, Idaho 48 hours prior to the start date.
I was in Bellingham, Washington at the time. (Everything Iwas promised in regard to pay and time off was falsified, I found this out later when I was at the school).
I arrived at the designated motel in Idaho, they had never heard of me.
When I finally got a room with a stranger I recieved a sexually humiliating phone call from one of the many men in the lobby. (other Students)
First day at school they told me they had never heard of me either, I then signed a total of twenty contracts giving Swift the rights to my life, it was sign or get out.
At 10am the first day, I found myself in the office of the Swift medical doctor, Doctor, Dr J. Weiland of Lewiston, idaho. At the eye exam I could not read the required line of letters with my glasses on, so the Nurse Practitioner started to ridicule me. She walked off and a helper pointed to a room and told me to strip down. I refused saying that if I had failed my eye test I did not want to strip down, what was the point if I had failed and I had!
An argument ensued. I was taken to the door of the doctors personal office, he waved his arm barring me from entry as if I was a stock yard animal. I asked the doctor if I had passed my eye exam.. "He chuckled and said "...you will have to get your eyes checked in two years". He committed fruad and signed my DOT health certificate. I told my instructor and he just laughed. Withing the next two weeks I began to understand why, 50% of all applicants were diabetic or borderline and they got through, my problem was minimal.
Five days into the 21 day course I asked the men in my class to stop the verbal taunting and sexual discrimination that went on in the class room, to begin with there were sixteen men and two women.
The instructor, Dave, just told the men to take it outside when I complained. I appraoched the ringleaders and asked them to stop. They said I would have to get used to it if I wanted to be a truck driver. It was their inate right to belittle me in class or out. I threatened to report them.
Being an adult, I gave the other students the benifit of the doubt and carried on, after informing the admistration that I was having a problem, but would try to resolve it alone. It was hard to be pushed to the outside of a tightly nit group and ridiculed endlessly as I tried for fifity one hours to back up and park the eighty foot big rig in the docking bay.
On the fiteenth day I was top of the class for Pre-trip and Skills. The students got together and every one of them went into the office and complained about me, each one making up some ridiculous story. The next day I arrived at the school excited to actually begin training on the road, but it was not to be.
I arrived at the School for the last days of training on the road and the Admistrator yelled at me "....to get in the office" and told me "...to get the hell out, that Swift did not allow discrimination............." I was allowed no recourse.
I am having nightmares, it is four weeks since this happened and I have to pay Swift $4000.00 dollars for the privilage of the worst experience of my life. I have a postgraduate degree and have taught at University. I happen to know what discrimination is!

Yes, I surely appreciate your imput, very very much.
I was extremely damaged psychologically. I have never ever been treated so badly.
I think that the quality of people at Swift is as you said, not the best.
I did not mean you were angry, rather i was describing my process of recovery.
I have also had some good luck work wise and I still respect Truckers, although, I will never be a trucker. The experience at Swift has crushed that dream.
I am so happy that you have a great job and that you had a holiday, really!

I am over it

Oh I am over it and am not angry. I just like to put out facts I know about this company because I know there are Swift cronies out there who read this. My wife works in a laboratory so losing this job just took cush money. I have had a wonderful two month vacation and will start a new job paying a lot more with less hours.
It was quite an experience to work for this company after I heard so much of them while I was an OTR driver. I learned that about all I heard was true. They are a sub-par company with sub-par management---which again I experienced all the way to the VP of human resources, safety and whatever else she weasled her way into. I watched lower level management fail and watched his manager do nothing to correct it. I watched these managers scramble to save their hide which in turn made some good employees loose their jobs.
Bottom line it is all about profit, which I can understand. I do not write these reports in anger, I write them to get the goats of people like Super trucker Nate who responded with some wonderful information to another new hire that got the shaft as many new people do that tangle with this entity called Swift. I write these reports because I experience this company first hand and can truthfully put out information about the crap training, standards, safety, and management.

Life has far more meaning when we are challenged by circumstances beyond our control.
How we reconcile ourselves to these unforseen events is what measures us as human beings.
Anger, then depression then ,more anger and then more depression until one day the entire situation that was so awful just vanishes into the haze of the past.
All things must pass.
If swift was in Sierra Leon, Iraq, or sudan they might have cut off one of our hands. As it was the cut off part of my joy, but that jsut makes it easier for me to spot similar situations in the future.
I believe that these individuals who have forgotten their humanity are very much alive and well at Swift. So just move on.

Why you went to Idaho

The reason you went to the Lewiston Academy is because they closed the Portland Academy. The Kansas City Academy was supposed to be the first to be shut down under Jerry's new rule but instructors at the Portland Academy got wind of their range being bought so they put KC on hold and rushed to Oregon. All the while never telling us in KC we were going to be jobless in a month. Your recruiter was probably one of the many outside recruiters Swift must use.
I dealt with both Swift recruiters and contract recruiters and believe you when you talk about lies. I personally know two recruiters that got the axe for lying....and they did it for a long time before action was taken. Sexual harrassment....that seems par at Swift Academies. We had two instructors fired for sexual harrassment, and about 4 or 5 who were constantly badgering female students. My list can go on with the shortcomings of this ridiculous company...I know first hand because I was there in the trenches.
Two of our Road Range Supervisors flopped hard. One took a female student to his residence, the other had about 2 years of driving experience and thought he was Super Instructor. The first supervisor was constantly drunk, couldnt be found...I tracked him in a truck at the lake one time and told our outstanding Manager about it and nothing was done. The National Academies manager came to KC after all the instructors threatened to walk because of this supervisor and their punishment for his wrongdoings was to give him an American Express card so he could take instructors to lunch...yes you read that right, both managers knew of the many breaks in policy but were going to reward him. He quit and went back to San Antonio from where our next supervisor came from. What a &*&* joke this character was. He ended up getting fired from multiple counts of harassment, sexual and just being power hungry. How this guy got hired as an instructor in the first place is beyond me....well not really, with Swift's hiring and training practice I can understand.
We had a Supervisor with less than two years on the road and another instructor with less than two years. When the manager was asked about hiring criteria...oh I messed up. We had to wait to get our license from the state because the instructor did not meet the criteria of three years OTR experience. I have seen many people get the shaft by this company and hate that someone trying to break into this industry has to encounter Swift. As I have said in previous posts about Swift, do your time and move on, there is a whole hell of a lot better companies out there.

I have to update my statement in regard to the Swift Trucking acadamy
Fraud.
It is one thing for a trucking company to sexually harass and psychologically torment their students; However, it is yet another thing when the United States Government in Washington does nothing when doctors are on the payroll of these company's and are giving away DOT health Certificates. Even when officials are told exactly what happened and where it happened they choose to look away. I can,t see to drive a rig and yet I have a valid DOT health certificate.
I faxed a total of five DOT departments, from the top man in Washington, Dettlebach, to the SMCSA, in Boisy, Idaho, to my congressman, Pedro Nava, in California, who just happens to be the top DOT in California.
Not a word, oh yes, I did get an e-mail from Dettlebach's office saying they would do something. I am waiting to hear!
Folks, watch out on the road, It seems every time I go out on the freeway I see a bigrig stretched out across the freeway or in a d**e what's up?
The driving acadamy's are not doing their job!
