I have a wedding dress for sale on craigslist. I recieved an e-mail from a girl wanting to purchase the dress. She said she lived out of state and she wanted to buy it for her sister who was getting married. She said in one of the e-mails that she would fed-ex the money to me and to take out what she owed me and use the rest for shipping. Well i recieved a check today (fed-ex) for 2,055 dollars i was only wanting $125 for the dress so i called the company to find out what the check was for (talk international) the lady i talk to said the check was fraud and not to cash it. I still have the e-mails that was sent from the girl and the check. Today i checked my e-mails and there was one telling me to cash the check immediatly and to take out $45 extra for myself. I emailed her several times wanting her to call me but she never returned my calls just responded to some of my e-mails.

How to protect yourself on Craigslist

AUTHOR: Tagurit - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 15, 2011

This is a common scam on Craigslist.  Anyone using this service should read the recommendations posted by Craigslist on how to avoid scams.   Basically if you (1) deal only with local people, (2) only accept cash - no money orders, checks, certified checks, etc., and (3) never ship anywhere you're likely to be OK.

When I post on Craigslist I very specifically state that anyone responding must provide both an email and a phone # as well as their name.  I ignore robospammer emails that simply "ask" if the item is still available and don't even reference it by name.  These are scammers who will all use the same tactic - they are deployed overseas, or some other such nonsense where they cannot get to a bank - but oh wait, they have access to the internet, but lo and behold, their bank doesn't do internet banking (B_llSh_t) and they want you to Fedex/UPS, etc. the item somewhere and they will give you a big money order, or they want someone to come pick it up and they have a money order.

There are a ton of take offs of these scams.   Cash only - local buyers - get their contact info = no problems.
