Tampa General Hospital, Tampa General Hospital Bariatric Surgery Dept A painful Discrimination of the Disabled for 850.00 Tampa Florida

My daughters doctor recommended Bariatric surgery for her. She is on medicaid and it is hard to find a doctor that would accept medicaid.

After extensive searching we found Dr. Michell Muir at USF Health located within Tampa General Hospital. His office informed me that my daughter would need (for medicaid) one years worth of medical records proving she is unable to lose weight. We did this and called back as we were told to do.

We were then told to attend a seminar. At this seminar (held in TGA) we were told to contine we would need $250.00 that day and then go to SPECTRA Healthcare for her examination. At this time we would need to give $500.00. We did.

My daughter has downs syndrome but is high functioning. She understands what she was going to do and proved this to the SPECTRA Healthcare facility. She was passed for surgery.Our next appointment with Dr. Muir he called us in a room and said he could not operate on her because she has downs syndrome.

When I called his office and said she has medicaid it was known she has downs. When we went to the seminar she was there with the downs and they took the 250.00 check. When we went to SPECTRA she stood there and I made out the $500.00 check. So while my daugher stands there with downs they will gladly take our cash...however when it came to the actual surgery they denied her because she has downs.

My daughters personal doctor was backing us 100%. My daughters only health issues are her weight. She has no other health issues.I asked for my money back with the additional $75.00 for an extra visit to their nutritionalist.For this fiasco of discrimination it costs over $800.00 unrefundable dollars.My daughter stood their crushed when they told us they would not operate because she has downs and cried as they led us to the back door.
