We recently had our first baby. We're so happy! My wife had registered for her showers at Target. We all know that if you have two or three showers, you get duplicates of some gifts, you change your mind on some things, etc., and you have to take them back. Sometimes people give you a gift receipt, sometimes they do not. It's a fact of these things, and most stores are aware of that and deal with it appropriately. But not Target!
My wife tried to return a few things that she had been given without receipts. She wasn't asking for cash--just store credit, like at any other store. However, Target has a $150 limit on returns to your registry without a receipt. That right there is pretty amazing, and different from any other store we've dealt with in baby or bridal registries.
I contacted Target about this, and was really astounded at their response. They said that if we get the original gift giver to go to a Target store with their credit card, they could look up the purchase and generate a receipt. You heard that right! They want us to call up a friend, tell them we don't want their gift, ask them to go to Target for us, stand in their huge return lines, and generate a receipt for us!!!
This is the exact text from the email they sent me yesterday, after my inquiry:
----------------------------------------------------------------
From your e-mail, it doesn't sound like a team member tried our receipt look up option. Did you know we can look up receipt information for purchases made by check, credit, debit or GiftCards?
To do this, the gift giver can bring the item with their card or check to any Guest Service desk and ask about a receipt look up. Most purchases made within the last 90 days can be found this way. If the look up is successful we can refund the purchase or offer a Target GiftCard.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
That's so nice of them, to allow me to offend all of my friends as a privilege of doing business with them.
When I responded to them that this was hardly a sound policy, their response was a terse "I'm sorry we aren't able to help with further returns unless you have a receipt or gift receipt."
We will not be shopping at Target for ANYTHING anymore, since that's how little they care about their customers. And I STRONGLY recommend that you do not do any registering for gifts there. That's clearly something they do not want to be in the business of. If you have friends who are getting married or ready to have children, advise them to avoid registering for gifts at Target. They'll regret it!

To the person with the "bad" video game

It is in fact against the law to return an opened game, movie or DVD. It doesn't matter whether it didn't work or not.. you can exchange for a new one, but you can't return it. The reason you want to return the game is unimportant, since you can't prove you didn't go home and copy it before trying to return it claiming that it doesn't work. Unfortunately people do these things and it's impossible to tell who's lying and who's telling the truth, so we all get inconvenienced eventually due to the poor morals of others. If they took all returns/excuses, companies would lose a LOT more money than they already do, and the result would be higher prices for everything. Do we really need more inflation? In the long run, you're saving a LOT more money because of these policies than you lose on items you're stuck with but can't use.
Did you happen to read the specs on the box to see if it was compatible with your computer? If not, that's really your own fault. Those specs are listed for a reason- so you know without purchasing it first whether or not it will work with your computer. If you did, and your computer met all the requirements of the game, you could have gotten a faulty game, and in that case exchanging the game would solve your problem. Did you try that? If a second game does the same thing, the problem lies with your computer, not the game, and the only thing you can do is pay to get your computer repaired and try again.

I bought a kodak camera at Target. It was apparently a special promotion because it came with a free pink holder. It cost over $200.00 and I paid with my credit card. The camera malfunctioned within 90 days so I took it back for a refund. I had my reciept and the box. When I took it to guest service they scanned the reciept and the box and said that wasn't the camera I bought. I was livid. Finally after approx. an hour and a half they figured out that there was a computer glitch because of the special promotion. They treated me like I was a thief trying to return a camera that I didn't buy. It was a HORRIBLE experience.

I used to work for Target over a half a yr ago. You would be surprised at what they do. The return policy is to help cut down on crime. unfortunatly, there are those who steal things from another store and then bring that item in and say that the item was a gift or they lost the receipt. Many stores are getting very strict about returns. If you do not have that receipt you are plumb out of luck. I have had problems myself when it comes to returns on a computer game that could not run on my computer. They would not take the game back stating that once opened it is against the law for them to accept the game because of copyright issues. How the heck was I to know that the game was going to destroy my computer the 1st time we tried to upload it. I got mad that I told them they could keep the game, I couldn't use it. I had gotten it for my kids to play. Totally messed up my computer. They told me I could send a card to their cooperate office, but I know better...it doesn't work. They only care for the bottom line and how many sales they can make not the customer satisfaction.

I've started at Target as a cashier, and did that for a year. The problem doesn't lie with Target, but the people who bought the items. On the registry paper that they have it says to show to the cashier at checkout, and most of them do. Once the registry sheet is either, scanned or typed in, the items are taken off the rigistry, immediately, no delay. So if someone else prints it out, it is taken off. If someone comes through with another one it informs them that it is no longer on the registry. When an item is on a registry a gift recipt is printed automatically. The fact that their wasn't a gift recipt is their fault.
I know that the items you are trying to return are on the registry, but that doesn't mean that they did buy them from Target. One thing that people are often surprised to learn is that the UPC for something at Target is the exact same for the same item at another store. So it is possible to buy it else where and then return it to Target. That is what Target is trying to prevent.
As for offending the people who bought the items. Well if it's simply that you got more than one I'd understand, though I see where it gets dicey if you just don't want a single item.
I know it may not be super user freindly, but the main reason that the policy is in place is to protect Target and to protect prices. If we do keep getting ripped off by customers, usually by stealing and fraud, stores fail, and I know of at least one that did. I know that you weren't stealing or commiting fraud, but we can't really bend the rules.
Target has the recipt lookup for a way to help with the legitimate purchases. If ypou don't want to use it then we can't really do anything, cause if we did bend them for you then the next person who bought a PS3 at walmart, but wants to return it to us broken will want it too.

Target's Policy of looking up receipts through a check or credit card does not work either

I bought my daughter a DS for Christmas with two games. I could not find the receipt when she said she didn't want it. I took a blank check in and tried to return the DS. It did not show. The next time I went to Target, I brought my cash card. It did not show. Yesterday, I was seperating receipts and finally found the receipt. Today, I tried to return the items and was told too bad because the 90 days had passed. The items had been purchased with a check! I was never offered an in store credit. All items has Target Bar Codes on them. None was opened. I called Customer Service and spoke with two managers. I explained that I had already tried to return the items two times. I was told too bad. I am out almost $200.00!

Wow, Steve from henderson NV - your are a Target team member and you of all people know what the return policy is, right? Especially with DVD's. If you paid cash and lost the receipt, then you are out of luck. If you used your Target RED card, or a check, then use Receipt Lookup to process the return.
And for Tom from TX - $150.00 on a Baby Registry return is Generous. And how did you receive 3 high chairs if the people used the Baby Registry?? As soon asone purchased that, they shoud have turned in their form so that it was updated. And why didn't they come with the gift receipts? That would have been nice, eh? Don't blame other's ineptness on Target and their return policy!

I bought 2 DVDs from Target, I work with them, they know me. I bought one DVD then forgot and bought another, I lost the receipt. I now have 2 DVDs of the same thing. I can not return it.
If I did that at Walmart I would have store credit, if Walmart still does that.
Your not the only one abused, they abuse Target Workers too. They say people grab things off the shelf and come back and want store credit. I work with them, they saw me buy it, they said it would not be fair for customers to see me get credit and others not get credit too. My DVD cost less than $40 still I did not get store credit. one has never been opened, its still in the sack I bought it in. I just lost the receipt.
There are many unfair thing in life, as customer or a worker, you can be either frowned upon, or not, for needing to use the restroom, needing a drink of water, needing a bottle of water near when working, or get fair working conditions. Target is building more stores, to be closer to people, yet be distant to people, in some ways. Fast, Fun, and Friendly is the motto, not always real. There are Target stores that have unfair working conditions or fair working conditions. They expect us to do more with less hours, you most have 20 hours to have a health plan and some other things, if we do not please target management, to do our work, as they expect, because its not always practical, to think it can be done or not be done, then workers come and go, it does not have a union, the new get the blame for not finishing in time, yet they can do a good job too, therefore people come and go, the good workers could leave because they where too severe or for another reason, for example if you have a lot to do, and your thinking of ways to move faster, then they complain your not fast enough, therefore people leave, its unfair. You as a customer, can not be the only person abused, what is unfair is unfair, what ever is the truth, remains the truth. People can be truthful, people can lie, People can have fair working conditions or unfair working conditions. If it takes starting a union I think target would wish they treated there workers better, if they have unfair working conditions, or customer problem, there is so many eyewitness cameras there, are they really sure you and I took it off the shelf to get money for it.

Other Stores Want Customers

Ever receive four high chairs as gifts? We did, and so you need to return three of them. Yes, asking three of your friends to go wait in line to generate a receipt is offensive, but to just say "don't return it" is hardly a good answer. And yes, a store doesn't want to take returns for items that were not theirs, but these are gifts that are on our Target registry. We're not asking for cash, just an exchange. And the fact of the matter is, that stores that want customers (unlike Target, who thinks of customers as a hassle) will do what it takes to resolve these situations. We have not had this problem at BabiesRUs, Macys, Williams-Sonoma, or Crate & Barrel. And most of those stores can tell us, if we're unsure of whether the gift came from there or not. They can scan in the tag and say that it did not.
We generated a few thousand dollars' worth of sales for Target, and these things we're trying to exchange did come from there. Bottom line is that if you're registering for a wedding or baby or whatever, why would you register somewhere like that where they make life so miserable for you, when you could register at places that truly want you as a customer and want to make returns (which are inevitable in a registry situation) as painless as possible?

It makes sense to me that you need a receipt to return anything.
Incidentally, if you would offend the gift giver by returning the gift, maybe you shouldn't return it.
I would never try to return something I don't have a receipt for. Just plain common sense.

$150 sounds pretty generous. What do you want them to do? Accept any and all merchandise that comes through the door without a receipt? How would they know that the merchandise even came from Target? It's a well known scam for people to bring in stolen merchandise to a retailer and return it for the full retail value. These stores have to protect themselves somehow.
