Put $5200 down on a new car. I was told that for every $1k down, reduced my payment by $20 a month. Signed the 10 or so papers with the purchase agreement being last. The interest rate was right. The amount for the car was right. I expected to pay MSRP. Did research and all over the country people were paying MSRP. Couple of days went by..looked at the purchase agreement again and no where on this paper was the $5,200 I gave them. I would have thought that in the middle of the paper where they break it all down and add everything up that's where it should have been listed.

NOTHING! My gut feeling tells me I padded the dudes pocket. Very pissed off. I would have thought my payment would have been reduced after they took the $5,200 off the purchase price and I only borrowed what was left. Because when you take what I am paying x's the months I'm paying for it...it equals what I will have paid for the car. No discount for paying cash for almost a 1/4 of the car upfront. Never buy from them again.

There is one of two things happening here.  Either you just gave a person $5,200 in cash and didn't get any form of receipt or proof that you did, or you don't understand how the "numbers" are broken down and what you signed.

There is more to the final cost of a car than just the MSRP(which if you pay that you are paying TOO much to begin with).  Items such as Taxes, Registration, and any "add-on's" you purchase such as extended warranties or insurance, can add a couple thousand dollars to the price of the car.  Finance managers don't need to take $5,200 in cash they can "line their pockets" by getting the commission on selling you all of those extras.

My guess is that after you add those back in, you may find that those "extras" is where most of your down payment went to.  According to you $5,200 was about 1/4 of the cost of the car.  So that means that the "car" was about $20,000.  Now, if every $1,000 lowered your car payment down by $20, this also means that every extra $1,000 would increase the payment.  Not including these extras, your payments would start out at about $400 a month.   So your payments with the down payment according to what you have written should be about $300/month.

So what was the final cost of the car, the amount you financed, your Interest Rate, Length of the loan, and monthly payment.

Never pay MSRP

Only an idiot pays MSRP for a new car.

The S stands for suggested. Your research should have included typing should I pay msrp on a new car into the Google search field.

Only an idiot signs an unread contract.

Only an idiot doesn't get a cash receipt.
