In Dec, 2004 I took my granddaughter's car to Magic Mechanic. We got it back on New Years week end. My granddaughter drove it to work at Daytona Beach. That same day the car broke down on her way back to Orlando. Being New Years week end, Magic Mechanic was not open and we could not find anyone to tow the car so I rented a tow dolly from U-Haul. We also had to buy an electrical connection for my van.

We figured the cost of towing her car to Maghic Mechanic to be $45.00 which included the cost of the tow dolly, the electrical connector and gas. We were promised a discount of $45.00 by an employee called Chip, who is no longer there, on any additional costs to get my granddaughter's car running again, but they never gave it to us and I forgot to remind them of it. So the agreement between Chip and us was that when we brought a vehicle in again, he would give us that discount, but it always ended up that he never gave it to us and I would forget it each time.

On tuesday, 06/28/05, we had to take her car in to have an alternator belt replaced, to find out why there was battery light coming on on the dash when the key was turned on and to check out what was wrong with the A/C. We got the car towed there by Tuesday evening. Chris told me that they would check out the car on Wed. morning. They never checked it till Friday evening and we did not get the car back till Saturday, 07/02/05.

Between Tuesday and Friday we kept calling them about the car and Chris was rude with us about it, said things like, "Do you think your car is the only car in here?,we are still working on cars that came in here last week."; then why did he tell us they would start working on the car Wed. morning?

When we went to get the car they charged us 1.5 hours of labor,$114.75, for puting a new belt on which I already had and 1.5 hours, another $114.75, labor for tracing and fixing problem with main battery line, no charge for chking A/C I guess because I do not see anything on the ticket for that. Total cost was $229.50.

When I asked for the $45.00 refund for towing which we had been promised in the past but never got, another new person there refused to give it to us because he said that he was not there when the promise wes made.
After we got the car back I called four other repair shops and asked them how much it would cost to do all of what was done. The cost averaged out to be $110.00 for everything, the lowest estamate being $69.93 at Midas Mufflers.

I want a refund from Magic Mechanic in the amount of $164.50 which includes the differnce between $229.50 and $110.00 which equals $119.50 plus the tow cost,$45.00, for which we were never reimbursed.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Put them on the spot for the $45

AUTHOR: Bruce - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, July 03, 2005

It sounds like you are entitled to the $45 credit you spent on towing the car, because they promised it to you. Put them on the spot for it.

The owner is Larry Perry 407-629-2661. Schedule an appointment with him. Bring in your reciepts that show him that you continue to use his shop and that you are a valuable customer. Explain the situation with the towing, and explain that you are only asking his shop to cover your actual expenses of $45, not your time. And finally, remind him that a $45 discount does not really cost his shop $45. So really, they are getting a pretty good deal.

As far as the difference between what you paid for the repair, and what you could have paid for it elsewhere, I don't think you really deserve a refund for that. Just because someone COULD have done it for less, it does not mean they DID. You could have told the shop not to do the repairs, and then taken it somewhere else. But then, when you are in your meeting with Larry, you can always for it.

Please respond and let us know how it turns out.
