The Thrifty Car Rental office in Cancun not only charges you for insurance you dont need but it also overcharges you by converting your US obtained quote into pesos at a 14.80 exchange rate and charging your credit card.
The credit card converts it to dollars at the official 13.20 rate. For example, if you get quoted $500.00 in the Internet, they will convert it to 7400 pesos which t the 13.20 official rate becomes $560.00.
When contacted Thifty offered to reimburse the difference but declined to stop the practice so I have declined their offer and requested that they stop abusing American tourists, however, they told me it is out of their hands how the individual branches work.
Given the fact that this appears to be a regular practice by this and other car rental companies an effort should be made to insist that Mexican franchises abide by fair business practices.

Exchange costs the vendor money. A business will have to pay a fee to exchange your foreign currency, then they have to dedicate time to do the special accounting and so on. Then do you doubt that they are looking to make a profit of those costs?
Insurance, I have been bit this way myself. Mexico has a very difrent legal system. Rental car companies have gotten to the point that they refuse any US insurance. All because insurance companies won't pay in Mexico. Yes you technically had coverage, and no they won't accept it.
