In 2006, I signed up to take one online class at Thomas Edison State College (TESC). At the time I was thinking I would take more classes so I applied for financial aid, BIG MISTAKE!

I was somehow granted financial aid, even though I was only a part-time student taking only 3 units online. The cost of the actual class should have been about $800. However TESC also charged me a "tuition fee" of $2,100. Since I was somehow awarded financial aid as a part time student, a total of $2,900 was charged by TESC to Sallie Mae as my financial aid.

Imagine my shock to find out that almost all of my so called "financial aid" went solely to TESC in fees and not for any actual classes!

I now owe Sallie Mae well over $3,000 for the ONE online class of 3 units. I was never a full time student at TESC and this is the only class I've ever completed there, yet it cost me $3,000! HOW CAN THIS BE?

I am still trying to fight this 2 years later but get nowhere. Meanwhile interest keeps compunding and I owe Sallie Mae more and more as I fight the charges. TESC refuses to refund any of the money or offer me additional classes. I have reported this to everyone I can think of, including the US Department of Education but they all turn their backs. This is just so wrong. How could ONE class possibly cost so much money, there is just no way.

I feel so used and taken advantage of.

The information at tesc.edu couldn't be more clear. It's a real college and requires actual enrollment.

This is a simple case of someone who didn't pay attention.

You also had to approve any loan you received. In doing so, the amount of the loan was right in front of you.

Unbelievable.
