On Sunday, January 15, 2017, 9:14 am, My wife and I posted an Add on Craigslist to sell our 2011 R-Vision Super Sport Series, 32 foot travel trailer for $16,800.00. At 9:20 am, I received a text message response from (305) 340-4491 with an individual identified by his email address only as thompsonroy@gmail.com asking if the trailer was still for sale. At 9:33 am, I responded back informing Thompson that it was. At 10:01 am, I received a text message from Thompson stating he was ok with the asking price. Thompson continued to stated that he could only pay through PayPal and that his pickup agent would be sent to pick the trailer up. I responded back and asked Thompson where he was located, he responded "Delaware is my home." Thompson asked me to send an Invoice so he could send me the payment through PayPal. At 12:11 pm, I completed and sent Thompson an Invoice with the asking price of $16,800.00.
Here is where the the scam starts. At 1:53 pm, I received a text message from Thompson stating "I need you to do me a favor as I added an extra fee of $1,200.00 USD to the total payment. I need you to send this fee to the agent coming for pick up and it needs to be sent vis Western Union as that's the only way he can get the money."
My concerns:
In his last statement Thompson identifies the agent as "he." however provides the agents name and address as: Barbara Saltarelli, of South Naples, FL 34112. (No street address is provided.)
Why doesn't Thompson pay his agent directly?
None of Thompson's text messages have his name, address, however his phone numer from his initial text message is 305-340-4491. (probably a pay as you go phone)
Thompson is willing to buy the trailer sight unseen.
Thompson never asked about a clear Title to the trailer.
As a former Detective with Department of Treasury it is my conclusion that Thompson (or who ever he is) wanted to reveive the Western Union payment in the amount of $1,200.00, then would immediately cancell the PayPal payment of $16,800.00.
I cancelled the PayPal Transaction with no further action.
People like Thompson need to be stopped. By airing this attempt our community ,both Tucson and Sierra Vista would be armed with the information to prevent such scum bags from fraud.
