CHARGED TOO MUCH FOR A LOAN ON A VAN:
IN DECEMBER OF 2000, MY HUSBAND AND I GOT INTO A FINANCIAL BIND, AND COULDN'T MAKE OUR DECEMBER PAYMENT ON OUR VAN, WE WENT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND ASKED THEM, IF THEY COULD TRADE THE VAN WE HAD, FOR A CHEAPER ONE, AND WE GOT A 1996 CHEVROLET LUMINA, OUR OTHER ONE WAS A 1997 CHEVROLET VENTURE VAN.
BOTH OF US WAS STRESSED OUT ABOUT LOSING OUR ONLY MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION, SO WE SIGNED ALL THE PAPERS, AND I DIDN'T NOTICE UNTIL MUCH LATER THAT OUR PAYMENTS DID START IN JANUARY, INSTEAD OF FEBRUARY LIKE WE HAD THOUGHT AND THAT ISN'T THE WORST PART, THE VALUE OFTHE VAN IS LESS THAT $4,000.00 AND THE AMOUNT FINANCED WAS ALMOST $14,000.00.
IT APPEARS TO ME THAT WE PAID FOR BOTH VANS, ON THIS ONE LOAN. I DON'T THINK THERE IS A WAY OUT FOR US, BUT I WOULD SURE LIKE TO LET PEOPLE KNOW WHAT CAN HAPPEN, WHEN YOU TRUST A CAR LOT, THAT IS ONLY OUT FOR THEIR OWN PROFIT, AND NOTHING ELSE.

I am a consumer, but not the only one with loyalty to this dealer. Here is a recent letter to the editor from a long-time customer about the closing of the Chesrown dealership in Newark, Ohio due to the current financial crisis. (Again, to remind everyone, Tom Gill is the step-son of Norm Chesrown, whose dealership remains open. The Chesrown Newark location was operated by Norm's brother Dave.)

Losing Chesrown dealership a major loss to Licking County area
Nancy K Reed Lake Placid, Fla. May 9, 2009
Twenty-eight years ago, Dr. Nick Reed and I bought our first car from the Chesrown family. It was a 1981 blue Fleetwood. Since that time, we purchased 13 more cars from their dealership: Olds, Cadillacs, Lincolns, station wagons, convertibles, even a Jeep they had brought in for us. We bought all of our three sons' cars and our personal cars from this family dealership the entire time we lived in Newark.
We found them to be honest, trustworthy, friendly and very knowledgeable about the cars they sold. They were part of our life in Newark. They cared for us like we were family. Nick Jr. was our salesman. He was 16 when he sold us that first car. Nick Chesrown always helped us out in every way he could.
Chesrown sent their employees to Ithaca, N.Y., Columbus and Springfield to bring cars home to Newark to service for us. I have nothing but fond memories of this wonderful car dealership and the people who worked for them. They have our most sincere sympathy on this major loss to the Licking County area.

Tom Gill's a Good Guy and his family has 50+ Years as a GM Dealer
AUTHOR: Dirtyharry - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Friday, May 08, 2009
Tom Gill's family has been in the car business for over 50 years. His stepfather, Norm Chesrown, owned Chesrown Oldsmobile in Columbus. Tom's brother and Jim Gill (and nephew Ryan Gill) now own the Chesrown Chevrolet-Cadillac-Pontiac-Buick-GMC dealership, the Number 3 GM dealer in Central Ohio, and Chesrown Kia. Norm's brother Dave owns a GM dealership in Newark, Ohio. Tom's other brother owns Dave Gill Chevrolet in Columbus. Norm's a real nice guy from what I hear. If he wasn't I doubt his 3 step-sons would be GM dealers like him. They are a nice family and have given me good deals and good service before when they sold Oldsmobiles. You don't stay in business for 50+ years if you don't treat the customer right.

Very seldom do I read a rep off report and laugh aloud.

Thanks Tom from Florence, you really made me laugh..
Tom "used to be a sales rep" I can understand why. It is well know that a Catera was a flop. No one wanted them and there is a reason. You state this dealer sold you this near wholesale, sounds to me like it was a good deal. This dealership has absolutly no control over resale value. Resale value is determined by the buying public. It has very little resale because no one wants them. It seems to me that you are responsible for having your best friend buy it.
I respect Tom Gill Cheverlot and would not hesitate to purchase a vehicle from him. I assure you that the paper work plainly discloses that her negative equity was handled as it was supposed to be.

Give me a break... she doesn't realize how stupid she makes herself appear! Do you always sign documents before you read them? And what did you think was going to happen to your other loan? Mr. Gill, himself ,was going to just make it go away, as if by magic? You would have gotten that same deal anywhere. I have bought all my vehicles through Tom Gill and have always been completely satisfied. The sales staff, and the service staff are always friendly, and will do whatever it takes to make the customer happy. Maybe, next time you buy a car, take someone smarter than you. Just make sure they're not related to you, it might run in the family!

visit several dealers before buying a vehicle
AUTHOR: Cory - (U.S.A.)

Gillespie Ford in San Antonio attempted a similar deal with me. They advertized a Ford Explorer in the paper for 18k. We were trading in a 96 Suburu which we still owed $8600. on. The salesman says we can own the Ford for $23k plus tax. I ask him how in the world we got to $23k? He tells me it doesn't matter that's the price of the vehicle. I don't know how I'm being screwed , just that I am. Do the math. Kelly BB retail had the Suburu at $13k, wholesale at $11K and loan value, what a bank will loan on that vehicle at $9700. Those SOB's at Gillespie were going to give me $4000 for my trade in. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. The next day I put the car in the local paper at $9700 and it went in 10 minutes. I bought the Explorer at another dealer and have never been back and tell everyone I know and meet about the "deal" Gillespie tried to give me. PEOPLE, take your time, do some research , and visit several dealers before buying a vehicle.

I used to be a sales rep. at said establishment and friends and family are a car dealers gold mine. I brought my best friend in to look at a 00 caddy catera and it turned out to be a turd. All they can do is put him off about the repairs..he bought the car near wholesale value..and after 2 years owning the car out of a 4.5 year loan he is still $4000 in the dump, now how is that...I think they might have put new tires on it or something.....ahh the power of procrastination......

Tom Gill Chevrolet - The only honest Dealership
AUTHOR: Jim - (U.S.A.)

This is a response to the lady that called
Tom Gill Chevrolet a "rip-off".
I purchased a 2000 vehicle (new) from Tom
Gill, and was amazed how the dealership treated
me during the purchase. There was NO pressure to
do anything, and my wife and I were treated like
family. Since the purchase, we have received numerous phone call follow-ups, as well as letters and cards, to make sure that we are happy with our vehicle.
Recently my wife and I had some work done on our vehicle which was covered under warranty. We
picked the vehicle back up, and as we were driving home, it started making a strange noise.
We stopped half way home and called Tom Gill Chevrolet. They sent a tow truck to our location to pick up our vehicle and we rode back to the
dealership with the driver, our vehicle in tow.
Upon arrival, the service manager told us to take
his vehicle to use until they could find out what
the problem was with ours. (our loaner was a new trailblazer).
The next day, Tom Gill Chevrolet called us to let us know that our vehicle was fixed, that something had not been tightened up properly. They had one of their employees deliver our vehicle to us and pick up their vehicle. We
had a deductable on our warranty, however due to
our problems, Tom Gill (himself) waived this, which resulted in no cost to us at all.
My wife and I both agree that Tom Gill Chevrolet is the only place that we will buy a
new vehicle from.

Who's At Fault Here, Really?
AUTHOR: Jim - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Saturday, March 15, 2003
Like the other respondent, when you trade in a car in which money is still owed, do you think that loan balance just vanishes? You still owe it and it needs to be paid, end of story. But you also freely admitted you learned of the terms of the deal AFTER you signed the papers. Why is that? There is an expensive tuition you've paid here and if it makes any difference, I've done probably a whole lot worse!

They do absolutly nothing to help you at least at a dealership
AUTHOR: Sara - (U.S.A.)

..this is crazy
of course they are going to add your negative equity to your current vehicle. I for one only buy at tom gill and feel that this consumer is just uneducated. i am so surprised at this accusation. and to the comment of the customer that feels that Tom Gill is out to make a profit, of course isn't every compnay in America. If no one made a profit then the economy would be worse than it already is.
I would not expect to work 12 hours a day and not get paid, but i suppose this woman does. A dealership is not a non-profit organization that donates vehicles they are companies that are run to make profit.
I am sure that this customer got a good deal but just doesn't understand a thing about buying a car and in that case i think they should experience buying a lemon frm a personal buyer. Which i have done.
They do absolutly nothing to help you at least at a dealership you have people there daily to make your experience a good one. But that is just my opinon. of course i actually educated myself before i bought a car.
Advertisers above have met our
strict standards for business conduct.
