I received much the same information as the precious report; I was sent a check and told that I had won a prize of $82,000 dollars in the International Publishers Sweepstakes.
The check for $2,890.00 was supposed to cover Administrative and clearance fees. "Before cashing the enclosed check, please contact Ms. Jennifer Maxwell your account representative at telephone # 1-778-316-9153."
This letter looks quite professional. however, I was suspicious that the check drew on a bank other than Trans Credit Financial or the International Publishers Sweepstakes. It was drawn on Pittsburg Steel and Mfg. Co. Inc. When I called the phone number on the check. I was greeted, and then hung up on.
Smells like a scam to me!

My name is Kirk Nelsen. I am the President of Pittsburg Steel.
We have learned about this scam just recently, as we have been receiving numerous calls from individuals across the country who have received just such a check. Yes, they are bogus, and no they are not from us. Somewhere along the line, a crook got a hold of an old check of ours and started using it for this scam (and a few others). We have noted that many of them sent to us have a different phone number inserted underneath our Company logo. Therefore, you were not talking to a representative of our Company when you were hung up on.
We have spoken to numerous people - over 70 easy - about these bad checks, and have received many in the mail, or via fax from them.
We are currently trying to get someone in law enforcement interested in pursuing this matter: FBI, US Postal Service agents or FTC. If you would like to fax or mail the check and letter you received to us, you are welcome to do so. Our contact information is shown below. If you would like to turn it in to the agency of your choice, please feel free to do that as well.
