Purchased a new TroyBilt walk behind Series 440 self propelled mower from a major home improvement center, paid $320.00 for it and have used it 4 times only to have the self propel unit give out!
Found out from the retailer that these model series was recalled by the manufacturer in 2005, however customers who had already purchased one were NOT notified, and any units the retailer had in stock were NOT recalled!! So any mowers the retailer had in warehouses that were left over in 2006 and even into 2007 were defective!!
My unit has an electric start which I really like, and it still runs and mows, I just have to push it, instead of it pulling itself......which is the real reason I bought it to begin with!
Will just have to wait until the winter to take it in for repairs. Seems like the manufacturer should have to repair ALL units made in that year, prior to the recall being issued.

"Seems like the manufacturer should have to repair ALL units made in that year, prior to the recall being issued."
But unfortunately, the manufacturers sold their soul to the box stores thus screwing the independent dealer that would normally have done this work before the units were sold. Now, these same independent dealers don't/won't take care of it for the manufacturer only to be screwed again by not being paid what the job is worth under warranty.
All in the name of selling cheap to the consumer. Which did you want? A low priced machine-which is what you got, or a slightly more expensive machine that could have been bought from a dealer who does stand behind their product and values their customers? This is the paradox facing this industry today.
This machine is also actually made by MTD who is notorious for cheaply made outdoor power equipment. Their mowers this year are going to have the Chinese knock off engines on them.
