Now, these same independent dealers don't/won't take care of it for the manufacturer only to be screwed again by not being paid what the job is worth under warranty.

A low priced machine-which is what you got, or a slightly more expensive machine that could have been bought from a dealer who does stand behind their product and values their customers? This is the paradox facing this industry today.
This machine is also actually made by MTD who is notorious for cheaply made outdoor power equipment. Their mowers this year are going to have the Chinese knock off engines on them.
