I have attended TUI University, formerly known as Touro, then TUI, now Trident in Cypress, CA since 2005. In June, 2006 I received my Masters of Science in Health Science with a concentration in Health Education, with a 3.93GPA. I continued my studies with them, getting a graduate certificate in law.

I spoke to an adviser about applying for the PhD program, but was not ready yet, and was working full time as a college instructor. I chose to get another Masters degree with TUI/Trident, as in 2009 they had a Masters of Science in Public Health. I began my degree program, and now 18  months later, I am in my final course, last 2 weeks. I have completed the 40 credits  required for this degree and paid over $13,000 for this 2nd Masters. Their system even shows me in degree audit standing.

Today, an adviser called me to tell me that Trident/TUI has changed their policy; that there is no longer a Masters of Science in Public Health......and thus, I cannot have my degree! They changed their policy to show that one can obtain a Masters of Science in health Science with a concentration in PH, but not have a dual MSHS degree. They asked me to return my 1st masters degree, and would just re issue me a new one to show I have ONE degree with a concentration in health ed, and a concentration in Public Health.

You can't ask someone for their Masters degree back, you can't "change" your policy 12 months ago, while someone is IN a degree program, not tell them you will no longer offer this degree, allow them to continue, get the money then tell them, sorry you did the work,  paid, but you don't get the degree because we don't show we offer this anymore.

I work at a University and this just sickens me. I have contacted a lawyer as well. I think you should know what they are doing, and know that others are likely affected as well. I refuse to accept this, as I spent 18 months, 13,00 and completed the 40 graduate credits! ALL 10 courses were totally different from my 1st Masters, so while they changed the names of degrees, my degrees are different.

I would appreciate you looking into this matter for me. Perhaps those of us who began the degree prior to their "policy change" should be grandfathered in. I am also going to contact every single news channel in Los Angeles; this is unacceptable. These institutions cannot continue to get away with this.

TUI/Trident fixed my problem!

AUTHOR: Jclaire - (USA)

POSTED: Friday, June 17, 2011

I just wanted to follow up, as I promised TUI University I would. In regards to my situation; I was enrolled PRIOR to the University changing their policy. The admins contacted me, reviewed my specific case and I now have my Masters Degree in hand.

I'd also like to note, that they were very gracious and accomodating with me, and took the time to investigate the matter. They resolved this fairly and quickly, and I thank them for that.

Interesting Case

I am also a dual-degree graduate of Trident/TUI.  I find what the plaintiff is saying to be interesting but I also see the university's point. Concentrations are not like majors. You can have dual major degrees. But most concentrations, even dual ones, usually are listed on the degree, in this case a MSHS. I think what the university is saying is not to really "turn in your degree", but they will issue you a new diploma that reflects both of your concentration accomplishments, which you should be very proud of. I also work at a university in texas and we do the same thing here for concentrations, albeit undergraduate. I know Trident University to be a reasonable institution so I'd suggest the plaintiff elevate it to a higher level within Trident University. There's always people caught in the middle of organizational and academic changes. If not, have them send you a new sheepskin that reflects both of your concentrations for employment purposes and be sure your transcripts reflect the two as well. That's what I would look at if I hire you. I hope you get to resolve this with Trident University as I think it's a great school. I hope you get accepted in the PhD program. Good luck to you.
