We found an online advertisement for labrador puppies for $400.  The "seller" said he had moved to Fort Smith, AK and could not care for all of the puppies given his new job.  He requested an additional $100 for shipping.  The seller made arrangements for the dog to be shipped using USHIP Pet Transportation Service.

They used the USHIP website to provide what appeared to be a bonified shipping request and invoice and requested payment through use of a RELOAD-IT card.  The next day we received an email from the shipping company stating that the carrier provided by the seller was inappropriate for air transportation and we needed to pay an additional $1,500 to rent a pet carrier for the flight.  The email stated that the entire amount would be returned to us upon delivery of the puppy.

When we refused additional payment, they threatened to take the dog to Animal Control who would likely fine us and press charges of animal cruelty and pet abandonment.  I replied that I would like them to please take the puppy to Animal Control so that I could have someone verify that they had a puppy.

I requested the physical address of where the dog was being held.  I requested pictures of the dog in the crate.  The address they provided was fake and they said that company policy prohibited taking or sending pictures of the dog.  I contacted the local Fort Smith police department and they could not find the address in their database.  I told the seller and store manager that I would not pay another dollar and contact between us ended.

The two gentlemen I dealt with both had an African accent.  The store manager's number had an Oregon area code.

They stole the USHIP.com logo to validate their email correspondence, but as I understand now USHIP does not actually provide any physical shipping services.  If I had understood the operation of USHIP.com website, then use of the USHIP.com logo should have been a clue.  The shipping service should have had a unique name.
