I rented U-Haul truck #TM1263 on January 3, 2010, contract #28508327, at the Lincoln Park U-Haul, located at 1200 West Fullerton, Chicago, Illinois 60614. The purpose of the rental was to pick a new sofa up at the local Costco, deliver to my home in Logan Square and relocate my old sofa's to my younger brothers home in the Old Town neighborhood. The mileage out was documented at 75,443. Mileage in was 75,454 miles. Total miles travelled = 11. The gas gauge out was at 5/8's of a tank and the claim is that the gas gauge was at 3/8's of a tank when I turned the truck in, however I put 1/2 a gallon of gas into the truck prior to returning it and the needle was at 5/8's upon return. I was overcharged by $60.63 as a "Fuel charge" because Uhaul claims the needle was at 3/8's, making the total cost of my rental $97.77, when it should've only been $37.14, which is the $19.95 truck rental, $.99 per mile and taxes/surcharges. My complaint is that I traveled a total of 11 miles, which was documented by both parties. I find it to be physically impossible for me to have burned through 1/3 of a tank of gas covering that amount of road, half of which was with no cargo in the back and the other half with only 150 lbs of sofa in the back. Either U-Haul trucks are incredibly fuel inefficient, they're unmaintained and the gas gauges are broken, or they rent trucks that have holes in the gas tanks. I made several attempts to contact a manager, and "Crystal" said he would call. He has not, and its now been 10 days. I hope that you review my case and assist me in getting a refund of $60.63, which I feel was stolen from me. Just because I give a credit card access to a company does not mean they can make up unreasonable charges, and considering the miles driven, $60 is incredibly excessive and abusive.
