In July of 2001, we were given a 92 Ford Ranger, to give to our oldest son when he got older, by my mother in-law (who was his whole world) that passed away at the end of that month. We decided to move to Idaho in August, so we went to Uhaul to get a trailer to haul our stuff. Uhaul attached a 6'X12' trailer to the truck and said our truck would be able to pull it from Vancouver, Washington to Boise, Idaho with no problem.

We left for Idaho August 17, 2001. We took I-84 east and broke down just before Dead Mans Pass on the hills just east of Pendleton, Oregon. Uhaul towed it to Boise and we had to call Republic Western Insurance Inc. who represents Uhaul. We tried desperately to work with our adjuster, Brian Vannen, and the vice president of the company, Tom LaTush.

We asked to have our truck fixed by Al's Car Care in Boise. At first they towed it there. However, when Al's Car Care mechanics said that it needed a new engine and transmission, and possible a new radiator, as a result of the trailer it was pulling, they sent the truck to Homedale Auto Salvage in Homedale, Idaho with out our permission on August 28th. Then they told us they would not move it somewhere else despite our rejection to the shop it was at and they were going to put a engine and transmission in the truck that had 14,000 miles on it, the truck would only take 7-10 days to fix, and it would have a 1 year warranty.

Three weeks later, September 18th, they said it was done, and we could get it back. When we arrived at the shop to pick it up, we discovered that they lied to us and the engine and transmission has at least 67,000 and the name on the receipt said Jerry's Auto Clinic in Caldwell, Idaho. Both the shop and the insurance company were rude to us, lied to us, and gave us death threats. We called the insurance company immediately and told him that we did not trust the work that was done because it was not running right. We also told him we were heading back to Portland, Oregon to live with family, of the threats the shop made to us, that the shop would not give us an invoice of the work that had been done, and the suspicions we had about the shop not being legitimate. We even called the phone number from the shops receipt and the person who answered said they had that number for 15 years. We were also told that Jerry's Auto Clinic was shut down in Caldwell, Id by the police for stolen auto parts, which is when they moved to Homedale, Idaho and changed their name to Homedale Auto Salvage.

We headed back to Portland, Oregon the same day we got the truck back. On September 19th, at 4:00am we finally hit the eastern border of The Dalles, Oregon and the truck broke down because of the engine and transmission again and is, still today, sitting at the Shilo Inn at The Dalles.

We called the Auto shop and they said "too F***ing bad.", refused to help, and made more threats. We called the insurance company and told them the problems and they gave us the same response as the shop.

We are still fighting with both of them just trying to get some help and some answers since they have ruined our sons truck. We are still getting death threat's from the insurance company and the shop.

Our name's are Robert and Tracy Hawk and our son involved is, 4 year old, John Brundage III. Our other children that have suffered as a result of this are Zolynn Brundage and Nickolas Hawk.

If you or anyone else can help in any way, we would all appreciate it. Thank you in advance!

To the people that are sladdering Jerry Auto Clinic And Homedale Auto Salvage.

AUTHOR: Kristin - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, March 03, 2004

Look Robert and Tracy Hawk I personaly know these people you are sladdering, i deal with them on a dailey basis. I think you are just pissed off due to the fact that you are a mechanically impaired, its not someone's fault if you do not do your research, I think personaly you should have done some more homework before okaying your problem. Me and my husband bought a 91 ford ranger from the same company and we have never had one problem, if we did encounter a problem they were very helpfull in doing everything they could to make it right.

In brief I have bought many vehicals from both the homedale shop and Jerry's Auto Clinic. And just to let you know they never were shut down do to stolen parts, they were actually robed and lost over half of thier high priced machines to check the new vehicals, such as the computer of the car. And that is a flat out lie that they were closed down by the police the owner of the shop which name is Val sold the property so the police could build a bigger police station, so if you are going to do your homework you better do it right because you are now open to a slander lawsuit and I hope Jerry and Jim win, and to say that your children suffered is just a low blow and you are a pure excusse for a parent, and guess what we are not feeling bad for you your children or your husband.

You need to seek medical advice for your mental torment on other people, next time do your research even a 17 year old would know that ford ranger would be unable to pull that size trailer, sounds like you just want to blame someone for your mess up, when you should sue uhal

Towing w/ a Ranger

AUTHOR: James - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, January 18, 2003

Unfortunetly, the employee who hooked the trailer up to your vehicle was wrong. Even if the Ranger was an extended cab 4x4, the biggest trailer that can safely be towed is a 5x10 trailer,(open top or enclosed). This is because the curb weight of the vehicle is less then 3500lbs. U-Haul has put rules and procedures in place to prevent these types of situations. But as in your case, like others out there, the rules and procedures were not followed. I do apologize for the problems you have had. I also wish you luck with this and hope that you think about U-Haul in the future for any of your other moving needs.

No Excuse from Uhaul

AUTHOR: Susan - ()

POSTED: Thursday, October 24, 2002

I used to be one of those people that rented out the trailers and trucks for UHaul. We have a chart that lists what a vehicle can tow and maximum weight limits for that vehicle. If needed, the chart even suggests adding an oil cooler and radiator cooler to the vehicle for added security depending on where you live and where you are planning on driving to.

There is no excuse for these people to have gone through the problems that they have. If the renting facility had done their homework as required instead of just worrying about getting another trailer on the road, they would have told the consumer that they needed both the oil cooler and radiator cooler and that the truck could not handle the 6' x 12' trailer.

As far as I am concerned, I feel that UHaul is totally to blame and should reimburse these people for full damages. If they were smart they would contact a lawyer and proceed with a small claims against UHaul.

Don't Blame the trailer-blame the hill

AUTHOR: Mike - ()

POSTED: Tuesday, February 12, 2002

Under normal conditions a Ford Ranger will tow a 6'x8' tandem axle trailer with out any problems. I have towed a 4,500 lb. horse trailer with one.

East of Pendleton, OR. on I-84 is what they call Cabbage Hill. As being a local from Pendleton I still do not know why it is called a "hill". A few miles out Pendleton you climb up a 7% grade for 6 miles to Dead Man's Pass. In August the temp. can exceed 90 degrees.

Class 8 trucks have engine failures on this grade. New cars will overheat if you keep you foot on the gas and don't shut of the A/C.

As a engine failure was the reason for this Rip-off Report, most likely to engine overheating, is common on Cabbage Hill and to blame the people who rented the trailer is absurd!

It would be better to blame the the state OR to not have waring signs as to the grade like CA.and NV. does.
