I had previous problems with movers so this time around I was sure to check BBB and consumer sites. I contacted Unified (GM Marc Z) and was very pleased pleased with the level of service they strived for. I was told the movers would leave Hyattsville at 7am and should arrive at my townhouse no later than 9. June 22, 2007: At 9am, no movers. 10 am no movers, when I finally called at 1030am I was told they would be there soon. They finally arrived after 11am-traffic in Northern Virginia is bad but not 4 hours bad.
I was moving out of a 4 level townhouse with a lot of stairs (fully explained in my appointment interview). The movers dropped my bedroom armoire down the stairs, breaking the armoire and a staircase spindle. My daughter witnessed the event. At the end of the move when I was able to see the damage, the mover first denied they drop then told me the office was closed and there was nothing he could do, call the office on Monday. The movers had put my daughter's bed together wrong, resulting in it collapsing as soon as she sat on it, luckily she was not hurt, just scared. The movers also had to move an appliance out of the kitchen and into the garage, they scatched 40 boards of my brand new hardwood floors because they drug the appliance instead of rolling it.
I called on Monday, no response, emailed and received an insurance claim form that had to be notorized. I completed the form for the broken spindle and the armoire and sent it registered mail on July 16. August 16, no reply no confirmation from company, I emailed Marc and as told it takes 30-60 days. Sept 16, no reply sent another email and was told it takes 60-90 days. Oct 16 no reply and sent ANOTHER email. I was finally told that they only refund based on weight and they would be in touch. On October 24 I receive a claim form for a refund of a whole $150 (they broke a $1200 armoire and a $125 spindle). I was very disappointed with the quality of service provided, I would not recommend this company!

Due to BBB report the broken spindle has been paid for in full.

Our organization has exceeded it's financial responsibility to this particular customer. In any service industry no matter how hard you try you can't stop frivolous complaints. Every customer is given an opportunity to purchase full coverage replacement insurance or they can except our free valuation insurance. The choice is theirs. This customer had chose not to purchase full coverage insurance and then complained about receiving a reimbursement exceeding our responsibility. Our organization is not perfect. But we always do our best to exceed our commitments to our customers. In this case even exceeding our commitment was not enough and for those of you that are in a service industry business I'm sure you will agree nothing will ever be good enough for this type of customer. If you have any questions feel free to call our organization. we are not perfect but we are honest.

Fulfilled The Contract

Yes, the moving company is correct. Per the contract you signed with the nice people who provided good customer service (you do not base your choice of a mover on their customer service - as you now realize), claims are settled at $0.60 per pound - and per the contract you signed, you agreed to be reimbursed for that amount. Accordingly, they are only fulfilling the terms of the contract with you.
Any mover who only offers minimum valuation is someone you needed to eliminate from consideration from the start. Major moving companies generally offer what is called Full Replacement Value - meaning if they drop an armoire, they will replace it. Next time you move, consider one of the major movers - the more you'll pay using them will offset the total out of pocket you're now experiencing (move cost plus the cost to replace the armoire, plus the cost of repairing the floor).
