I submitted my resume and truth be told within in minutes I recieved a missed call/voicemail as well as an email from "Human Resources" stating that I seem to be a good candiate for an entry level position with their company. I thought, "wow, this comapny is really eager, something MAY be up."  I scheduled an interview for the following day.

I walked into a building that is a Jewlery Store but had a sign that read that Unique Marketing Group was upstairs.  As the elevator doors opened I heard music blasting coming from an EMPTY office. I thought, "Ok, why does this sound like a club, and why is this office completely empty at 2 pm?"  I said to the receptionist, "wow, its really quiet in here."  The receptionist hesitated, "oh, yeah, everyone is on lunch."  A WHOLE office out on lunch after 2 pm on a Tuesday, ok???

Of course other canditates started storming in the office to interview.  I thought, "great, another one of those cattle calls."  This wasnt too bad, I was in a room with about 6 other people but mind you I was early.  I then met with the manager.

The manager seemed nice, a bit robotic, but nice.  What I mean by robotic is that she seemed ingenuine.  "Omg, hi!  What are your interests? Tell me about yourself!! Oh my god, I LOVE that!" Blah blah blah.  I have a personality so naturally I went on with it and humored her.  The manager went on to tell me that they worked with Fortune 500 companies in marketing and advertising.

As the interview went on.  The manager asked me "do you like to go outisde?"  Being athletic and active I naturally said "yes."  "Oh okay, GREAT, beacuse we are outisde A LOT," the manager said with a painted smile and her eyes bulging out of her socket.  This should have been my red flag but you like to think that their are good people in the world who wont try to scam desperate college graduates.

I left the interview and a few hours later I recieved a phone call.  "Congrats!  Will you be available from the hours 1-8:30 pm tomorrow?"  "Sure, I will be."  Before I hung up the phone the manager said AGAIN, "Congrats!!"  All a psycholgoical scheme to make you think like you're moving up somewhere in the world.

Day 2:  I walk into a club...again.  Music blasting, people the same age as me walking back and forth.  I told the receptionist, "I'm so confused, why does it sound like a club?"  "Awe, dont be confused, they're trying to do something new with the "clients.""  The manager introduces me to the girl who is "taking time out of her busy day for me."  Oh, such poor psycholgy skills...

As we are walking out, I asked my "trainer" multiple times, WHERE ARE WE GOING? "To meet with clients."  Then, she would try to side track me, "OH MY GOD, do you like Sephora or MAC?" Nice try.  I get into an unkown car with two other strangers and my trainer is trying to manipulate me about how great this comapny is.  Within the first five seconds I knew I wasnt working here.  But I played their game, painted smiles and robotic nods.

The three of us get dropped off to a surburban street.  DOOR TO DOOR SALESMAN.  Oh, these are your "clients??" Manipulating innocent people in the comfort of their own homes to buy Verizon packages with all these "fees."  I felt like I was in one of those really corny 80's movies where you knock on an 80 year olds door to sell a vacuum cleaner and she offers you a plate of blueberry scones.

I was NOT allowed to ask about compensation until my "trainer" felt I was the right candidate.  The manager even told me before this ridiculous day started, "she's the one you have to impress."  Oh, okay...

Lunch time: My trainer sat down with me to discuss compensation.  Oh, goody!  I passed the test to be a door to door salesman, just what I went to college for!!  The trainer had a peiece of paper with four columns:  Account Executive, Junior Assistant, Assistant Manager, Manager.  I'm pretty sure that how it went.  On the bottom of each column there was a box that said "Average."

Average Income for Account Executive/Junior Assistant: The trainer wrote $600-$800, $700-$900.  It takes 2-4 weeks for an Account Executive to advance and 6-8 months to move up from that.  As she was trying to side track me with "so, what do you like to do for fun?" I saw her write down "commission."  That's when I was like, COMMISSION???  "Yeah, that tends to scare people but dont worry I'm honest and you'll make a lot of money."  So honest that all I have been getting for the past two days was a bunch of LIES from your company.

I knew I wasnt going to work here from the first 5 seconds of me walking into a club again and I was two seconds away from calling someone to pick me up but I thought I'd humor the day.  After banging on peoples doors until 8:30pm we finally went back to the "office."

I received a paper asking me how my experience was and if I would like to work with the comapany.  Thanks but NO thanks.  "We think you have the personality for it."  Yeah, and I would like to put my personality elsewhere not to be a part of a cult who works based on commission banging on peoples doors.  Especially when I am one who slams the door when someone rings my door bell trying to sell me anything.

As I was leaving the manager called my "trainer" and told her what happened.  I was waiting for the elevator and saw my "trainer" say "WHAT, WHY?"  You two could have at least waited until I left.

All in all this job is a waste of time.  If you're one who would like to devote 11 am- 9 pm knocking on doors selling Verizon packages all day long in the rain, snow, sleet, sunshine on comission without even being able to use the bathroom, GO AHEAD.
