I was contacted by Officer Smith while I was at an expo in Chicago. He also called my work and my reference person about a pay day loan. He told my work he was also Officer Smith and needed to speak with me. To my contact he said that he was Officer Smith and that I had committed fraud and I was about to be arrested. He told my reference that he would also be arrested as an accomplice to fraud unless I called him within 30 minutes. I called him and he also said that this was Officer Smith, that I had committed 3 counts of fraud and that people were waiting at the courthouse yo file the paperwork. He said that if I did not pay him $690 within 30 minutes that they would file the paperwork and have officers arrest me at work. He would also contact my supervisor at work and tell him that I had committed fraud and would probably loose my job as well as go to jail. I said I did not have the money and that my wallet was stolen so that I could buy some time. These people call me all the time now waiting for my funds to be released. They said the original company was Midland Marketing and when I tried to speak to them they would not give me their address or any information. Since then I have contacted the Federal Trade Commission, the Attorney General of my state, the New York Attorney, and the commission of consumer affairs. The Federal Trade Commission said that they have violated the Fair Debt Collections Act on more than one level and that I can sue. I also tried to contact a class action attorney about the matter but he said that because it was a phone conversation and not a written statement that it would be hard to follow up on all the testomonies that each individual would have to give. If there is a class action attorney or a regular attorney that would like to get these scum bags to pay for their services, I would like to hear from you.

It could be a new angle on an ongoing scam -

Hackers stole info from a payday loan website and have been calling the customers and making these exact types of threats. Claiming to be officers etc

Any collection attempt that starts with threat of arrest is ILLEGAL.
