If you're going down to Greenville Avenue in Dallas on a weekend, be aware of these bottomfeeding shysters: United Tows LLC.
On Saturday night I met up with my girlfriend at an excellent cajun seafood place called Dodies, located in a little strip mall called Caruth Place Shopping Center, 2121-2129 Greenville Ave. This place sits next to a Dry Cleaners, a Subway Sandwich shop and a Chinese joint called New Big Wong.
I arrived at Dodies at 10:30 pm and had dinner while waiting for my sweetheart to arrive. Since my girlfriend was late meeting me and Dodies was shutting down at 11, we paid our bill and decided to stroll down the street to get her something else to eat. Seeing towing signs around the parking lot, I called my friends who worked inside the restaurant to see if it would be okay to leave my car in the lot. They said that that nobody from Dodies would call to authorize the towing of my car. Since Dodies was shutting down, the Dry Cleaners were closed, and Subway was closed, it didn't occur to us that the presence of our cars in the lot would prevent any of the other merchants from making their money from other would-be patrons. New Big Wong was still open, but there were plenty of open spaces in the parking lot for them. Feeling confident, we strolled down the street.
What nobody knew was that United Tows LLC. had a troll lurking in the shadows, watching us, and supposedly taking photographs of us leaving the parking lot. Even though we had already patronized Dodies, and nobody from the management of any other establishment in the strip mall called to authorize it, United Tows felt justified in hooking up my car at some point a little after 1 am, and towing it off to some remote South Dallas location. They charged us $148.00 to get the car back.
If we had parked in the lot while these establishments were still open and then ran down the street without patronizing them, then the towing service would have been justified in towing us. But this wasn't the case.
If you're considering spending money on lower Greenvile, be aware that a deal cut between the owners of the Caruth Place Shopping Center and United Tows LLC, supposedly excludes any verbal agreements made between the management of the establishments and their patrons regarding cars in the parking lot. The management in these restaurants may have no awareness or control over the petty thievery and low-grade extortion going on in the parking lot by United Tows LLC.

United Tows LLC was justified

Actually United Tows LLC was justified in the towing of your vehicle due to the fact that you admitted to leaving the premises. The only way you could have had assurances that your vehicle would not be towed is if you had an agreement with the owner/manager who has the authority to say whether or not a vehicle gets towed or not. Just because a friend that works at an establishment says it is okay to leave your car there while you leave the premises does not make it correct. You should actually blame the friend and instead have tried to get the friend to ask the owner/manager of where he/she worked to call the towing company to rectify the situation. As they have authority to do it, if that had happened you might have got your vehicle back free of charge, but you did not. 99% of businesses have agreements with towing companies that if people park their cars on their premises and then leave that they are to be towed, there is no one to blame but yourself for this occurrence. New Big Wong's could have actually called it in since they were still open regardless of how many parking spaces are left, but you are right as far as one thing goes. Towing companies do have paid spotters for individuals who park their cars in a businesses lot and then leave to go to another establishment for whatever reason. Some people use these spaces as a way around paying for parking (being a cheapskate) and end up paying for it in the end. I guess the lesson here is, if you are leaving a place of business take your car and park it where you are going and don't blame others for things that were under your control and the decisions you made.

Thanks for your input Robert.
Just because a particular action is "within your rights" doesn't mean that it's not also unnecessary, mercenary, and motivated by simple greed. People do all sorts of shitty things and get away with it because they are acting within the letter of the law. I'm not saying United Tows does anything illegal, just lame.
We can all smell the stinky reality when a tow company is hustling cars out of a lot before 2am even though most of the businesses in that strip have shut down by 11.
It is what it is.
Again, if you're going to Lower Greenville, know that you can't have a nice meal at Dodie's or New Big Wong and then step next door to Libertine for a beer without first moving your car off the lot. There's a troll out in the parking lot waiting for you to make that mistake. This guy's looking for an excuse to hook your car up and run it out to south Dallas.

Once you left the resturant, you were no longer a patron. How were they to know if you would come back for the car at all that evening. They had every right to tow it.
