I was a PhD student at the University of Missouri in political science. At the time, they said they had a 100% placement rate. They have since changed their website.

They admit too many PhD students than they can mentor, they put Master's students in PhD classes, and provide poorly led seminars and coursework.

They cannot teach statistical research, better would be to take something form the psych or stats dept. What they consider graduate research is nothing but sophomore level undergraduate research.

The faculty plays games with the graduate students, and if you have professors who do not like each other on your PhD committee you will never get your degree.

Political science is known as a department where professors exchange sex for grades. There were 3 professors who did this, one has retired. Undergrads who complain are harssed until they withdraw the complaint and Jesse hall does nothing. Forget about getting the state of Missouri to do anything.

There is a high turnover of faculty and you will probably have a chair or other faculty members leave after comps and while doing research.

You will get screwed by your committee after doing comps, assuming you get that far. Research is changed, they decide you need to do another topic (its not your PhD topic), they don't like your research design while you're writing youre dissertation. They also will waste semesters while you wair for them to do anything. Also, if you get a PhD, they will do nothing to help you get a job.

Most graduates end up working for the state of Missouri, not in academia.

Avoid this place.

The University is a joke!

AUTHOR: Molly - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, March 14, 2005

I had a very unfavorable experience as a staff member in the Office of Technology and Special Projects at the University of Missouri. I felt that the work conditions were utterly ridiculous, and absolutely infuriating! Rather than being treated as a valuable employee and a team-member, I felt babysitted Instruction was not offered but used with words of manipulation, like "disapproval will cost your your job," even when I wasn't offered initial instruction on how to do a task. I felt set-up for failure by being delegated with projects for which my employers were aware I had no experience, and patronized when I asked questions for help in order to complete the tasks. Overall, I accepted the job under the pretense that I was going to be acting as a office staff memeber carrying out secretarial duties and possibly constructing a business web page and creating and implementing a new database system, tasks for which I am qualified. I later learned; however, that the job had a history of high employee turnovers. I can speculate that it's partially to do with the harassment from one woman, Margie Floyd, in the office whose feeble put-downs, insults and belittling comments were flicked away like an annoying fly. She even hid a coffee mug and spread a rumor that I had stolen it. It was one afternoon as I was returning from lunch that I caught another employee, a personal friend of Ms. Floyd, rummaging through my personal things. The final straw ocurred after another lunch period in which I returned to find my computer disc completely erased. Of course, I was shocked! I wasn't sure which one had committed this act; however, I was ultimately fingered as the aggitator amoung the employees and dismissed from my duties. I was completely surprised and very angry. I considered filing a complaint with Human Resources but then decided I would use litigation.
